Just a couple of days after scoring 72-77 at the 87th Masters, Rory McIlroy has decided to withdraw from a $20 Million RBC Heritage event scheduled for this week. McIlroy was supposed to be the first golfer to meet the media for the upcoming designated PGA Tour event. Michael Kim, another PGA Tour golfer, happened to take a dig at the PGA Tour loyalist.

To match the purses with LIV Golf, PGA Tour increased the purses of some of their events and well, calling them elevated events. The increased money came with some rules. PGA Tour pros were allowed to miss just one of these events and had to compete in others in order to get their PIP bonuses.

Currently ranked 250th in OWGR, Michael Kim regained his PGA Tour Card in 2022-23. Recently, Kim took a jibe at  McIlroy for missing yet another one of the elevated events after he missed one at the beginning of 2023.

In a recent Tweet shared by Michael Kim, he mentioned that Since Rory is going to miss more than one designated event, does have to give a part of his PIP money back to the tour?” then he jokingly continued and wrote, “Asking for a friend.”

This was Kim’s sly shot at the 4 time major winner for missing his second elevated event.

McIlroy to pay hefty penalty for his actions

When PGA Tour announced that McIlroy had withdrawn from the upcoming elevated event, the question arose of what would now be the resulting consequence. According to the statement by the policy board that was released in October last year, “The penalty for not satisfying all elements of the mandatory participation requirement is limited to the bonus distribution for the Player Impact Program.”

In 2022, McIlroy was second on the board to earn $12 Million from the PIP bonus, but for this year it seems that his winning money could be cut short as a penalty.
