In certain corners of the world, cellphone usage is strictly prohibited, and some of the most exclusive golf clubs are at the forefront of this trend. While many golf enthusiasts are aware of Augusta National Golf Club’s policy against the use of cellphones during the Masters, it may come as a surprise that a select few country clubs also uphold stringent regulations regarding mobile devices.

Los Angeles Country Club (LACC) has established itself as one of the golf clubs with the strictest policies regarding the same, joining the illustrious Augusta National in this regard. By tightly limiting the use of mobile devices on its prestigious grounds, LACC upholds a persistent commitment to maintaining the heritage and decorum of the game.

As the Los Angeles Country Club gets ready to host its second major championship event the U.S. Open next week, it becomes clear that it has a reputation for being one of the most strict anti-phone places. The history of the club is in line with this strict rule.

In 1956, during the U.S. Amateur, which was the last tournament held at LACC before it reopened for the Walker Cup in 2017, more than 3,000 people showed up to watch the finals. This shocked the club members.

Jim Murray, a late great columnist for the Los Angeles Times, wrote at the time, “Horrified [were the members] when the public showed up in [ugh!] shorts and no shirts … and, in general, showed little respect for the musty old place, actually looking in the windows and disturbing the members dozing in front of their cribbage games.

LACC, which is at the top of the list of clubs with severe mobile policies, follows the illustrious Augusta National policy, which has a long history of having strict rules about phone usage. Both clubs put a lot of focus on maintaining the customs and etiquette upholding the game of golf.

How does the LACC policy resemble Augusta?

In addition to the no cellphone policy, similar to Augusta National, the LACC’s policy tries to maintain an atmosphere of uninterrupted play and uncompromising emphasis on the game. By putting these precautions in place, LACC hopes to keep golf’s ageless appeal and players’ sense of brotherhood.

LACC places a similar emphasis on the value of respecting the peace and quiet of the golf field as does Augusta National. LACC ensures that members and visitors may fully immerse themselves in the game, appreciating the natural beauty and difficult terrain without needless distractions.

In addition, LACC’s dedication to maintaining the sport’s integrity goes beyond mobile regulations. The club, like Augusta National, places a high value on decency, good sportsmanship, and maintaining golfing customs. These similar ideals produce a sense of kinship between the two elite clubs and a shared appreciation for the need of preserving the game’s core.
