The AIG Women’s Open has reached halfway, and the week is going to end prematurely. Only 65 players were able to make the cut at the tournament, while the remaining 79 golfers had to pack their bags and return home. However, it was very surprising to find some extremely well-known players who could not make the cut this year. Be it a major championship winner, or a former world No. 1, no one could make it through the game at Muirfield.

The first surprising name who couldn’t make the cut was Lexi Thompson. This is the first time Thompson missed the cut since 2020. But this time, Muirfield showed her no mercy. The second name on the list is Jin Young Ko, who shot 76-71 (+5). Her struggle could be seen during the opening round due to the wind. It’s surprising because Ko is one of the most consistent players, and it was the first time she missed the cut in four years.
The next name is Anna Nordqvist and she managed to shoot 74-72 (+4). Nordqvist could be the defending champion, but she unfortunately missed the cut. Another unexpected golfer on the list is German professional, Sophia Popov. She made plenty of birdies but also had eight bogeys along with a double. The final score led to her collapse.

Some more names include Stacy Lewis and Catriona Matthew, who could not make it across the tournament. Lewis struggled during her first round, and her short game skills were not enough. While Matthew made three doubles and not enough birdies. It’s her fifth missed cut in the last seven years she has played golf. Her game showed that age does affect a person’s performance when playing against young blood. Laura Davies also missed it this year and has made only one cut in seven years at the Women’s Open.
Who is leading in the tournament?
South Korean golf legend, InGee Chun is currently in the lead and on the way to winning the fourth major title. Chun gave a unique reason for her motivation. She said “Before the start of the tournament my caddie Dean and I talked about the course and had a little bet,” Chun said. If I have a bogey-free round he’s going to buy me dinner and pay me $100 each day, so before each round, it’s like setting another goal. I think that mindset helped a lot on the course,”
