On Sunday, an Instagram post from Lexi Thompson quickly went viral. Almost instantly, it had 2,360 likes (7,700 at last count) and 115 comments. The LPGA star is one of the most popular players in women’s golf. The reactions came along the expected lines.

Thompson’s recent post had nothing to do with golf though. It was a fashion photograph, where the 28-year-old was seen wearing a pair of blue denims and a black top. “When you don’t know how to pose so you just look awkward and smile,” Thompson posted underneath the picture.

Lexi Thompson wows fans

Her fans jumped onto the post and the reactions have been positive. “Natural not fabricated,” wrote a fan. Another one tried to read between the lines and posted: “Regardless your smile says it all”. And a third one turned out to be even more impressed. “Great news, Lexi…you don’t need to know how to pose. You are absolutely stunning in every way!!!

Apparently, Thompson considers herself an outlier as far as dress conventions are concerned. Two years ago, she sort of mocked the Ladies Professional Golf Association’s new dress code via a “Throwback Thursday” post.

Got my new #LPGA dress code compliant outfit ready to go,” she had posted with a laughing emoji alongside a picture of her wearing an attire that offered a throwback to the Victorian era. Later, Thompson clarified it was just a joke.

LPGA’s revised dress code forbade plunging necklines, leggings, denims and joggers among others. The Tour’s earlier dress code only had the “no jeans” mandate.

Only recently, Thompson, who has 11 Tour wins, received the prestigious Founders Award at the 2023 Rolex LPGA Awards ceremony. She became emotional and said in her address: “Winning this award is a huge honor on its own. But to know that it was voted on by my fellow peers that I think so highly of and think such amazing women on and off the course.”

Form is temporary

She went on: “It means so much to me and I cherish every single friendship I have made in my whole career out here. My mom always says, ‘It doesn’t matter what you accomplish, you’re no better than anyone else.”

The award was given to uphold the spirit of the game, but performance-wise, this year hasn’t been very good for the one-time Major winner. She, in fact, missed cuts in all but one Major. But golf fans still love her graceful style of play and hope to see her back on top in 2024.

Hence, trading my Callaway driver for a keyboard, I've taken to enriching a reader's experience with my words as a Golf writer at EssentiallySports. Having already spent a quarter of a decade in the industry, I have had the privilege to cover many live events, including five ICC World Cups, one soccer World Cup, and even some big golf events, at historic locations like the RCGC. My career highlight, however, was writing for the Wisden Almanack. Now focusing on my love for golf and living by my maxim of "staying young by heart forever," I intend to reach out to every golf fan through ES, in this time of social media boom, and further my stance as a journalist.
