Michelle Wie West may have once been one of the most confident golfers on the LPGA Tour during her playing days. However, even a person with the strongest mindset can get nervous when it’s time to meet their in-laws. During a recent episode of her podcast Golf, Mostly, West revealed the first time she met her then-future father-in-law and the man behind the NBA logo, Jerry West.

Michelle Wie married Johnnie West back in 2019. The couple welcomed their first baby girl a year later, Makenna Kamalei Yoona West. Now as the golfer looks to spend more quality time with her family following her retirement from the sport in 2022, she had found some time to share stories from her more than a decade-long career through her podcast, Golf, Mostly.

During the ninth episode of her podcast, she and her co-host, Hally Leadbetter invited their spouses to the show. As the couple duo shared more insights about their personal lives, Mrs. West then disclosed the time she thought to have met her father-in-law for the first time.

In the nearly hour-long episode, both couples had a banter session sharing their stories. However, the retired LPGA golfer’s story surpassed all the witty moments from the episode. During the days when they were dating, Johnnie West took Michelle to Palm Springs in Florida to meet his parents.

While on the road, the golfer asked West, “If I ever met your dad before”, to which he replied ‘No’.  However, it wasn’t the first time the golfer was about to meet the NBA Hall of Famer. Jerry West, whose feats in the sport of basketball have earned him to be the man in the NBA logo, has many fans globally.

One such fan also happens to be in Michelle’s college during her early years on the LPGA Tour. During a KIA signing event, the golfer took the opportunity to take the autograph of her future father-in-law on behalf of her ‘Lakers geek’ friend in college. “I faded my slave for a month in exchange for this Jerry West audit lecture”, said the former LPGA star.

While it was the first interaction between the daughter-in-law and father-in-law, Michelle Wie West had forgotten about it during her visit to Palm Springs. So how did the interaction between her and the 1972 NBA winner unfold years later?

An awkward interaction between Michelle Wie and Jerry West

Since her then-boyfriend claimed that Michelle never met his father before, the LPGA star continued with the mindset of meeting Jerry West for the first time. As they entered Johnnie’s parents’ Palm Springs home, Michelle went to the kitchen to greet Johnnie’s dad.

Nice to meet you, Mr. West”, said the golfer. However, Jerry’s response left her embarrassed. According to Michelle in the podcast, the NBA legend said, “You know we met before” while referring to the KIA event in 2010. Her immediate thought was ‘Oh F***’.

Michelle blames her husband Johnnie West for all the misunderstandings in the podcast. “This is your this is all your fault”, said the 33-year-old to her husband who countered back with the question, “It is my fault?”. Nonetheless, the married couple laughed off the awkward incident in the end. Perhaps, it will be exciting to know what occurred during Johnnie’s first visit to Michelle’s parent’s house.
