The LIV Golf CEO, Greg Norman, has touched the nerves of everyone in the golf world with his latest comments about Tiger Woods. He wanted the G.O.A.T. and the other PGA Tour players to thank his company and its golf league for all the new programs the Tour implemented recently for the welfare of its players.

The statements led professional golfers like the FedEx Cup champion Rory McIlroy to speak against Norman. However, did you know that it was not the first time Norman made such controversial comments about Woods? And the former NBA star, Charles Barkley, was the one who went to his aid then.

Former NBA star wanted Tiger Woods to speak up for himself

Greg Norman, nicknamed the Great White Shark, has never been friends with Woods. And when the latter lost his form for a while in 2012, the Aussie said“What I’m seeing is that Tiger’s really intimidated by Rory.”

Notably, Woods and McIlroy started a friendly rivalry at the time. While many found their relationship adorable, Norman considered it the start of the end of Woods’ career.

“How long is he going to let people say to him anything about him?” Barkley said against Norman’s remarks in a 2012 interview. “I would like for him to just blast Greg Norman.” He further added, “I wish he would just go ballistic on Greg Norman.”

Furthermore, the former Small/Power Forward of the Houston Rockets expressed his disappointment in the 1997 Masters champion. “Tiger’s always taking the high road,” he said. “I wish I could just put some of my blackness in him.”

Charles Barkley is not against Greg Norman’s LIV Golf Invitational Series

Barkley was against Norman in 2012 for giving such statements about Woods. However, such is not the case now.

He was one of the few to show support for Norman’s LIV Golf Invitational Series from the beginning. He even attended the LIV Pro-Am event in Bedminster at Trump National Golf Club. Notably, he was also rumored to join the Saudi Arabia-backed league as their golf analyst.

Like Barkley mentioned in 2012, Tiger Woods has yet to make a strong comeback at Norman for his latest comments. He wanted golfers, including Woods, to thank LIV Golf since he believes the PGA Tour increased the purse of 2023 events and the PIP because of them.
