The American Football community experienced great sadness on Tuesday when one of its most treasured stars passed away. Ryan Mallett, a former NFL quarterback, passed away, reportedly drowning at the Destin, Florida, Panhandle beach. He was just 35 years old. His untimely death was announced by the NFL on its official Twitter account: “The NFL family is deeply saddened by the passing of Ryan Mallett. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”
The news, of course, hit everyone hard. And among those who were absolutely devastated by Mallett’s unfortunate passing was none other than the daughter of two-time major-winning golf legend John Daly.

John Daly’s daughter’s heartfelt tribute to Mallett
Between 2011 and 2017, Mallett played as a backup for the Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots, and Houston Texans. He started as the football head coach at White Hall High School in White Hall, Arkansas, in 2022. He threw for 1,835 yards, nine touchdowns, and ten picks in 21 career games (eight starts) with these teams during his time as a pro and left his mark on the NFL world, making his way into the hearts of the fans, including Long John’s daughter, Shy Daly.
She joined the plethora of people paying respects to the late NFL legend. Paying tribute to Mallett, she took to Instagram and wrote, “still doesn’t feel real. 💔💔💔”
Tom Brady, the NFL GOAT, was also among the likes of Shy and paid homage to the fallen star. On Instagram, he posted a story and wrote, “We lost a great man. Thank you for everything Ryan. Praying for the Mallett family and all their loved ones tonight.”

The sources claim that Mallett was swimming when he drowned and that when lifeguards dragged him to the surface, he was not breathing. He passed away in the hospital soon after.
The news certainly cut deep for the Daly family, especially considering the closeness they have to the sport. After all, John Daly could have been an NFL star if he wanted to at one point!
John Daly could have had an alternative career as an NFL star
Without John Daly, it would be difficult to fathom the golf world. He has developed quite a reputation for himself over the years, all thanks to his charm and, obviously, his extraordinary game. He won 15 championship titles during his stellar career, including two majors. But the 57-year-old was also interested in the NFL when he first started out.

During his high school years, Daly had a huge interest in football and golf. He played place-kicking and punting for Helias High School, which in 1983 won the state football title in Missouri. However, his interest in golf stayed with him. But his interest in football never faded.

During the 1991 PGA Championship, Daly reportedly discussed his desire to play in the NFL, according to former Colts coach Ron Meyer. Meyer stated, “If he doesn’t make the cut at the International, I’m bringing him in, and he’s going to be our backup kicker and kick an extra point for us.” We are confident that Daly would have excelled in the NFL had he played there.
