The newest league in the golf world, TGL, was supposed to make its debut this month. However, fate had other plans! The roof of the league’s designated venue, Sofi Stadium in Florida, collapsed, and hence, it was postponed by a year. The developments around it are still going on, and during his recent interview, Rory McIlroy spilled some interesting beans about the tech league.

Will Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TGL be able to fill the sportainment gap in the off-season?

With McIlroy’s appearance on the Stick to Football Podcast, the golfer shed light on several matters. After talking about everything that has been going on in the golf world lately, he also spoke about his brainchild with Woods, TGL. From his confident remarks, we have collated three major takeaways that hint that he is ready to spread the demographic of golf.

1. Rory McIlroy is confident about matching golf’s fandom to the NFLThe Northern Irishman said, “TGL, which is a new high-tech indoor golf league that we’re trying to start in the US with Tiger Woods, It’s going to be Monday night, primetime in  America.” This is the first time that golf is replacing the NFL, which has a major following in the United States. Golf has always been a sport that appeared less enthralling to the spectators who do not watch it regularly. But with the involvement of technology, this will change. With TGL golf is sure to find an ever larger set of audience. It certainly will be a turning page for golf in the heart of the American audience.

2. Golf to fill in  the shoes of NFL – The Irish golfer further added, “When the NFL stops for the season, we’re going to take that slot on a Monday night, and it’s going to be a kickoff to the week on the PGA Tour.” Getting a prime spot on Monday is a great achievement for the league. It shows that the American audience is ready to accept gold as a major source of entertainment besides the NFL and other sports.

The broadcast of TGL will come at a time when the NFL season has just ended after providing weeks of solid entertainment to the audience. Woods and McIlroy are making a big bet in choosing this slot of off-season. The golfers are sure about the fan following they command and are confident that they can bring that amount of viewership.

The television deal not only ensures the new league reaches all corners of the country but also that the revenue generated from this time slot will turn into one of the strongest sources of income for the league.

3. TGL’s big responsibility of continuing the entertainment legacy of the NFL The third takeaway from this is that it is not just the sports but the sportsperson that is half the allure of screen or actual entertainment. The regular and weekly broadcast of the NFL has turned Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and others into household names. As the season gets over, more than 300 NFL stars will catch a break from American TV. Following that, the pressure on TGL will be huge to become the perfect substitute for the audience.

From the words of Woods and McIlroy, it is evident that TGL is here to stay. But whether they will be able to secure long-term television broadcasts depends on their performance next year.
