Nearly every golf fan in the world knows who is the apparel sponsor of Tiger Woods. The golfer has had the same sponsor since his debut back in 1996. Nike, which is considered one of the biggest sports brands in the world, had its eyes laid on Woods during his amateur days. Moreover, the American sports brand showed its true love for the golfer, after his 2013 Arnold Palmer International win and his reclaim of the number one spot.

Back in 2006, Tiger decided to renew his contract with Nike for an undisclosed fee until 2013. At the time Woods was the number one ranked golfer in the world. However, following his off-the-course controversy a few years later, there was a decline in the form as well as rankings for the 15-time Major winner.

Nonetheless, Tiger regained the number one spot in the final year of the contract after a win at the 2013 Arnold Palmer Invitational. It was for the first time since October 2010 that Woods was on top of the golf world. His long-time sponsor Nike celebrated his win with a 4-word reaction that did cause a pinch of controversy.

Fans on social media didn’t appreciate the post, as it gave the interpretation of Tiger’s off-the-course alleged scandals. However, a Nike spokesman defended the post by saying, “Tiger has always said he competes to win.  When asked about his goals such as getting back to number one, he has said consistently winning is the way to get there. The statement references that sentiment and is a salute to his athletic performance”.

Since both parties have been loyal to each other, it has helped in developing a professional relationship. Following the end of his contract in 2013, Tiger decided to renew his contract with Nike for a reported amount of $200 million.“We’re comfortable with where we ended up and the career trajectory that Tiger will be on with Nike,” said Woods’ agent in 2013.

It’s very rare to see sponsors support their clients. However, being in a relationship for 26 years surely stands out from the rest. Tiger Woods has helped in creating brand awareness for Nike and simultaneously, the brand has helped Woods in becoming an international star.
