LIV Golf has been criticized for a long period of time for its Saudi backing. The rival league has just been revamped for its second season, which began last month in Mexico. Thomas Pieters,ranked 34 in the world, recently joined LIV Golf. The move has attracted a lot of comments and reactions, both criticism & appreciation. At the end of the day, don’t we all work for money? 

Thomas Pieters joins LIV Golf

Pieters commented that his life has not altered much as all he does is get on the plane and travel to the golf tournament and still try to win like before. Pieters called Keith Pelley, DP World Tour Chief Executive, and said  “I made the decision, and I move on.”

Peters spoke, “I’ve done 10 years of being on the road and trying to achieve my dreams. I’m not Rory McIlroy, I’m not Tiger Woods, I’m not going to be in the history books or have a massive legacy, and that’s OK,” said Pieters.

“I’ve made an unbelievable living out of golf, which is amazing for me and my mrs. and my kids. I don’t worry about that at all, actually. It’s just sport. It’s just golf. Happiness is so much more than just playing golf.” 

This news attracted a lot of attention from fans, most of it mixed reactions. Some appreciated the decision whereas some didn’t seem to get behind it. A user supporting Pieters commented, “tommy piets is already a legacy !!”, whereas another one said, “Good for him, it’s a job and don’t we all want to make the most money possible in our jobs?

I’ve always said “IDGAF what you make my title, I care what’s deposited into my bank account” Supporting the money offered by LIV Golf, a Twitter user said, “This is why so many players left. As for the big names like DJ, Cam Smith, Phil, etc. they got offered money they would make for winning all 4 majors just to show up to 1 event. Don’t blame them”

The video was criticized equally. A user said, “Liv folds in 3 years!  What then?” and another one said, “Yep no legacy in that guy” . Another Twitter user commented.

Thomas Pieters and his loneliness during PGA Tour

Thomas Pieters definitely adored his time in college at Illinois, where he won the individual national title in 2012 but life was lonely during PGA Tours. He mentioned,  “As a kid you obviously dream about playing on the PGA Tour, winning golf tournaments. I played a year on the PGA Tour. I did not like it,” “I got very homesick, very lonely, so for me that was kind of like tick the box, I tried it over there, wasn’t my thing and then LIV came around right at the right time.”

Pieters clarified that his comments should not be regarded as hate for the PGA Tour. he was just lonely. He expressed his sadness over the fact golfers don’t get time to socialize with each other on the PGA Tour.

According to Pieters, happiness is much more than playing golf. You can disagree with some of his thoughts but it’s hard to argue on such valid points. What do you think about Pieters’ move?
