Dustin Johnson hit what was been deemed the “greatest shot” in golf history. It was his tee shot at the 433-yard, par-4 hole 12th hole at the Kapalua that made headlines four years ago. But his remarkable stroke has been surpassed by a man named Ryan Iverson, who has managed to record a hole-in-one on the same course. And if that wasn’t enough, his ecstatic celebration included a friendly taunt for DJ.

The “greatest shot” eclipsed by a golf fan

A hole-in-one, where the ball lands in the cup on the first shot itself, is a celebrated feat for players on the circuit. So it’s only right for amateurs and golf enthusiasts to boast and showcase the same achievement to everybody. That’s exactly what Ryan Iverson did during his trip to the Kapalua’s Plantation Course, where he shot an albatross at the par-4 12th hole.

Iverson was on cloud 9 after his achievement. To give context, no golfer has ever achieved the feat on the hole, at least in official tournaments. In all of PGA Tour history, there has been a solitary occurrence of a par-4 hole-in-one before by American golfer, Andrew Magee.

It was the same hole that led to the “greatest shot” from LIV golfer, Dustin Johnson. The 2-time Major Championship winner recorded the heroics during his dominant 8-stroke victory at the 2018 Sentry Tournament of Champions.

His Sunday hit at the 12th was described as the “greatest shot ever hit in the game” by analyst, Brandel Chamblee. While it didn’t make it to the hole, Johnson’s rather-straight shot defied laws but ended up an inch shorter from making it a coveted hole-in-one.

Fan takes subtle dig at Dustin Johnson during celebrations

Iverson was well-aware of his achievement and seemed determined to make the most of it. His initial reactions involved recording a video of himself on the hole and sending a message to Johnson. “Dustin Johnson, you got just close enough, buddy, but not quite here!” he said.

That wasn’t the end of it. The jubilant fan took pictures of the scorecard and updated it on the cover page and profile picture of his Twitter account. He also pinned the tweet containing his wonderful achievement, so that DJ won’t have to scroll down too much to get extra motivation the next time he’s at Kapalua!
