Many people believe that parenting is a difficult task. The same feeling rushes over Jordan Spieth, who recently became a father. But fortunately for Justin, he has his own father’s, Shawn Spieth’s, parenting approach to follow, which worked very well for him. But fans wonder if that really is the best option, considering how Shawn revealed in a recent interview that he didn’t know how good the golf pro was until much later in life.

Spieth turned pro in 2012 and has since won 13 times on the PGA Tour, including three major championships. The golf pro is only missing the PGA Championship to complete his career grand slam. He currently ranks 14th in the OWGR rankings.

Fortunately for Spieth, the hands-off parenting was exactly what helped him fall in love with the game. Shawn opened up in team Spieth’s interview with Luke Kerr-Dineen from Golf Digest at the PNC Championship. He claimed, “I didn’t grow up playing the game.” The golf pro’s father added that he didn’t find out how good his son was “until he shot eight or nine under on the back nine of a short course one day.”

Shawn added that when he began beating regular golfers by a fair margin, only then did the thought occur to him. He said, “He’s got a five- or six-stroke lead, guys have been playing golf their whole life. I thought ‘maybe he’s pretty good.'” Despite that, Shawn could never have imagined how good Jordan would have grown to be.

He explained that had he felt even a little forced into anything, he would not have developed such a deep love for the sport. “You have to fall in love with the work on your own because it’s not always going to be easy,” he stated.
