Spiranac initially trained to become a gymnast, but a rare injury forced her to change sports. But her experience at the coaching facility wasn’t helpful, either, as she was allegedly a victim of bullying.

“The gymnastics community is toxic. You just do what they say no matter what. It’s really scary,” Spiranac said on her podcast. “I never felt like I fit in. I didn’t have a group of friends.” Spiranac attended the USA Gymnastics training facility, the Karolyi Ranch in Texas, where she encountered further “mean girl issues” where other gymnasts spit in her drink, threw away birthday cakes, and excluded her from activities.

“I’ve never felt like I fit in. I always feel like I’m walking in the wrong direction or swimming upstream,” Spiranac said. “It’s really hard for me to connect with a lot of people. “I always feel like an outcast … it’s just always been very different to everyone else.”

Why has Spiranac felt left out since an early age?

While she doesn’t hate them for this reason, Spiranac’s parents instilled a hard-working notion in their daughter. It meant the ex-golfer would find herself training and spending time alone for hours, while the rest of her age group lived a normal and social life.

Aside from the training schedule, Spiranac was a sheltered child. She was homeschooled since her fourth grade, and only got to a regular life after attending college.

However, she encountered more bullies in her college life, which ultimately caused Spiranac more mental health issues. But she started hitting the gym and took her troubles head-on, which helped her get a grip on her life. After everything she’s been through, Spiranac looks set to go a long way from her bullying days.
