If the Olympic Golf had a nickel for every time they disappointed the golf fans, it would have quite some nickels by now. The fault in the Olympic Golf started with choosing the wrong leaderboard colors, and now it’s ending with the whole play format it follows. Yes, that’s right! The golf community is demanding a major change in the Olympic format, and a few entities agree with them!

What change would Minjee Lee like in Olympic Golf?

In a recent press conference with the Women’s Olympic Golf Competition, the Australian representative, Minjee Lee, came up with a new idea to improve the entire Olympic experience for the better. When asked if she would like to compete alongside her brother Min Woo Lee, aka The Chef, who also represented Australia at Le Golf National and finished tied at T22, if the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics has a mixed competition, the golfer said, “If there is, I would love to be a part of it.”

“I mean, I think it would be really, really fun to play with Min Woo. Obviously, haven’t had too many opportunity to play with him as a team,”  she continued. The current golf format followed in the Olympics doesn’t have a mixed tournament; however, there is the Grant Thornton Invitational, which features both PGA Tour and LPGA players competing together, in teams.

While Lee suggested mixed competition, the golf fans were on to something entirely different. After labeling the 2024 Paris Olympics as “boring”, the fans came up with a solution themselves. The solution was that rather than following the current format, the Olympics could try having two days of stroke play and two days of match play. “For the next summer Olympics with golf, please consider a different format. Maybe 2 days of stroke play followed by 2 days of match play or some sort of team competition. Four days of stroke play is too boring. #Paris2024,” one fan tweeted.

Minjee Lee is not the only golfer who thinks that a mixed competition would be a fun addition to the current Olympic Golf format.

Jenny Shin agrees with Minjee Lee about the new Olympic format

Jenny Shin, currently ranked 48th in the Rolex Rankings, took to social media to share her thoughts on the current Olympic golf format. She suggested that rather than having the traditional 4-day individual stroke play commonly used in professional golf tournaments, the Olympics could benefit from a mixed competition featuring male and female golfers from different countries.

Not my idea; however, I wonder how fun it would be if golf in the Olympics was a different format than its regular 4-day event. 2-person team play, men and women team play from each country,” the golfer tweeted.

A 2-person team game featuring men and women from each country? Well, the idea does sound enticing. This format, she believes, could bring a fresh and exciting dynamic to Olympic golf. With all these viral posts going around, maybe this idea would be considered. Would you like to see the new format at the Olympics? Let us know in the comment section below!
