At first, it looked like Rory McIlroy had a bad temper tantrum at the Ryder Cup. But later, when the reality of the fan’s personal comments came out, the entire golf world was calling out the fans as the culprits. Now that the Ryder Cup commenced, the Northern Irishman has a subtle yet mature take on the feud.

During the post-match press conference, McIlroy was asked about the increased security for his pair. Talking about that, he shared, “The police out there and the amount of security presence was insane. Look, nothing was going to happen. There wasn’t going to be a physical altercation or anything like that, apart from maybe Tommy and Rosey up to the 16th tee yesterday.”

On the 16th green, Justin Rose sidelined Bryson DeChambeau’s caddie before his shot, which led to a heated argument between the two involving the caddie. But soon after the duo confronted each other, it calmed down. But apart from that nothing physical happened throughout. Even the heckling from fans was verbal (except maybe throwing a beer can at Erica); the fans mainly made personal comments about the golfer, but he dosen’t blame the whole of American fans for that.

As he talked further, saying, But look, it was — there was a lot of language that was unacceptable and abusive behavior. Look, it’s a minority of the crowd. It’s not the majority. The majority of people here are true golf fans and are respectful and let both teams have the same chance to hit the shots and play a fair contest. But you know, there was a small subset of people who behaved a little bit differently than that.”

This is a case for every sport where true fans of the sport respect the entities and the snacitity of the game while some end up abusing the systema nd putting others’ lives at risk while also demeaning a whole section of people. In the 2023 Ryder Cup, golfers had ut up with heckling from European crowds as well, although they weren’t as bad as this year’s. It still points to the bigger picture of the presence of rowdy crowds, especially when it comes to team events, around the world.

McIlroy was clear that not all fans were involved in this. He has shared the bold take despite comments like, “How’s your divorce going?” and “Your ex is looking for you,” which came his way. Even with his finger gesture, he still ahd the support of other prominent golfers defending his actions. Earlier, when McIlroy was seen using the F-word to the fans, Jessica Hadwin shared her thoughts on it.

Backing the golfer, Jessica wrote on X, “Imagine being legit furious and yelling insane shit to players who didn’t even know you existed in life and getting kicked out of a golf tournament. Same guys who DM players telling them to KYS over golf scores. Ultimate loser behavior.” Her post, garnering almost 66,000 views, has invited fellow golfers to share their thoughts on the issue and garner more support for the golfer. Hadwin had been vocal about the instances in the golf world. After her post, fans joined in, discussing the unethical comments made by other fans.

Shockingly, the spree of negative comments, initiated by Heather McMahan, who was employed by the PGA of America and serving as the emcee for the USA team, led to an official apology from the organizers, and they later asked the comedian to step down. But after that instance, Ian Poulter also stepped up in support of the golfer.

Just a few hours after the Ryder Cup commenced, he shared a video of Mark Crossfield, who talked about McMahan charging the fans against the golfer. With that video, he wrote on Instagram story that, “So so so disappointing and sad that this happened this way. This is not acceptable and must be fixed moving forward. Team Europe handled it so well, considering the abuse.👊🏻🏆🇪🇺🙏🏻.”

The chants of “F*** you Rory” were started by the emcee, which invited more fans to join in. However, despite all the negative feedback, the 12-man squad showcased dominance. In fact, McIlroy recorded a 3-1-1 record with his five-session participation, earning 70% of the points. The team eventually won with a 15-13 score and defended the title.
