Things in Rome just keep getting more heated. After yesterday’s matchplay, the Ryder Cup players from both sides set ablaze the internet on fire. Team America’s performance on the European curb and the European crowd’s hostility towards the American players kept the viewers on their toes.

Patrick Cantlay was in the spotlight for yesterday’s big game for multiple reasons. While the player made news for evoking the European crowd’s mocking chants, his caddie, Joe LaCava, joining Cantlay as his loyal mate, was not far behind. Tiger Woods‘ ex-caddie made some heads turn on the course yesterday, and the fans had a roaring reaction to it. Here is what happened.

Before the second day of play in Rome, Cantlay’s heckling incident ended with him causing a rift within the US team and becoming the European crowd’s laughingstock. Before the game, Cantlay refused to wear his team cap on the greens because he claimed that the cap did not fit properly. Following that, he made a statement about the players needing to be paid for playing in the Ryder Cup.

A media outlet reporting on the news said that it was in protest of the fact that, unlike all other golf events, Ryder Cup players don’t make any money from playing at the event. The message, however, was not well received by the crowd, as they connected his not wearing the hat to his asking for money. It triggered the crowd, and they started chanting slogans, making fun of Cantlay.

Day 2 in Rome ended with Cantlay’s 18th-hole birdie, with an overall 3-1 margin in the afternoon four-ball. The birdie resulted in Cantlay and Wyndham Clark winning the match against Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick. The scene left the European crowd and the European players in shock. Following that, Cantlay’s caddie, Joe LaCava, took off his hat and waved it around in the air during the middle of the play while Rory McIlroy was lining his putt.

This agitated the European players and the fans alike and set the groundwork for what looked like an on-course fight of jabs. The European crowd started booing at LaCava’s early celebration on the course, and European pro Rory McIlroy was seen saying something to LaCava after losing his game cadence as well.

The scene was telecasted live, and as expected, the fans reacted to it immediately, stating their sentiments. Here is what some of them had to say:
