Patrick Reed has been a controversial yet successful golfer since he turned professional back in 2011. The golfer decided to make the jump to Saudi-backed LIV Golf earlier this year. Though Reed may be much happier with his move to a lucrative series, the move itself has drawbacks.

The most common limitation is earning no points in the OWGR. Patrick Reed happens to be the latest victim of the matter, which has also resulted in a major setback for the golfer for the first time in 8 years.

Reed took part in DP World Tour’s Open De France. Unfortunately, after scoring one-over 145 in the first two rounds, he failed to make the cut. To make matters worse, the 32-year-old failed to earn any points in France to secure his spot in the Top 50 rankings in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Patrick Reed is out of the Top 50 rank for the first time in 8 years

Reed turned professional back in 2011. Two years after he turned pro, the Texas resident had his maiden pro win after claiming the 2013 Wyndham Challenge. Following his second win at the 2014 Humana Challenge, Patrick Reed has been part of the elite group of golfers to remain in the top 50 rankings, only until recently.

After failing to make the cut in Open De France, Reed is guaranteed to fall outside of the top 50 when the new rankings are released on Monday. This will be for the first time since 2014 that Patrick Reed will fall out of the Top 50 in the world.

Like many LIV Golf stars, Reed has also been a victim of the Breakaway Tour not falling within the criteria of OWGR. Since LIV Golf has 54 holes in their tournaments, the ranking body doesn’t offer points to their players. Nonetheless, 50 LIV Golf players, which also includes Reed, signed a letter to Peter Dawson, chairman of the Official World Golf Ranking, asking him to change the status of the newfound Tour.

Moreover, the defectors wish to receive World Ranking points in the first tournaments that LIV has held since its launch in June. The ranking body is yet to deliver a response statement. As far as Patrick Reed is concerned, after becoming a LIV defector, he cost himself the PGA Tour Membership that does offer points.

However, he is trying to mint as many OWGR points as possible from the European Tour, as he holds a lifetime honorary membership of the Tour. But till when will the DP World Tour allow the lucrative series of golfers to participate in their events? Fans will have to wait further for that answer.
