The 105th PGA Championship hasn’t been going the way the pair of Phil Mickelson and Tyrrell Hatton would have desired. Despite merely making the cut on Friday, the duo’s struggles at the Oak Hill Country Club have continued. Nonetheless, during the third round of the ongoing Major, both Mickelson and Hatton gave the fans a glimpse of their former selves from five years ago.

As the pair arrived on Saturday for their penultimate round, they continued with their misery of mastering the Oak Hill Country Club. Phil double-bogeyed on the second hole while recording a pair of bogeys at the 6th and 9th holes.

While he currently stands at +9, his third-round partner Tyrrell did start with no mistakes until he bogeyed on the 9th hole, similar to Lefty. Despite their unfortunate results in the event, the duo presented one of the highlights of the major.

Blast from the past, presented by Phil Mickelson and Tyrrell Hatton

Similar to the ongoing Major, Phil and Tyrrell were also paired together during a 2018 PGA Tour event. However, it wasn’t their similar pairing that surprised many; instead, it was their identical clothing that amazed the golf fans. As the tee times of the ongoing second major of the season were in jeopardy due to bizarre weather conditions, golfers returned to the field with their heavy material gear.

One of them was Phil Mickelson, who sported a black jacket along with some gloves. Meanwhile, his fellow pair-mate, Tyrrell Hatton, was unfazed by the stormy conditions. Born in High Wycombe, England, the golfer’s body didn’t feel the breeze of Rochester as he returned to the East Course with his regular T-shirt.

Mickelson and Hatton’s different approaches to their attire reminded the golf world about the pair’s outfit five years ago, when both golfers were also paired during a PGA Tour event in 2018. And even back then, Lefty chose to model his black jacket, while Tyrrell sported a regular green golf t-shirt.

Though both golfers are struggling in the current PGA Championship, their uncanny similarity did lighten up the mood of their fans. But how poorly are the pair performing at the Oak Hill Country Club?

While Hatton does have a better start to the third round than his partner, his commencement at the 2023 PGA Championship was no short of a disaster. He recorded 7 over par, in which he scored 7 bogeys and a double bogey. However, he did recover with a -2 round on Friday, which helped him make the +5 cut line.

Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson’s 3-over-par start to the event, followed by +2 in the second round, ensured his historic stay in Rochester for the weekend. Phil currently stands at 9 over par, tied for the 69th position, while Tyrrell’s +5 has held him tied for the 47th position. Though the duo’s performance in the ongoing major will soon be forgotten, their unintended blast from the past will always be remembered.
