The 2022 BMW Championship began at the Wilmington Country Club in Dela on August 18, Thursday. Notably, it is played as the second tournament of the FedExCup Playoffs on the PGA Tour, after the FedEx St. Jude Championship. It is also the 47th Tour-sanctioned event of the 2021-2022 season.

As one of the end-of-the-season FedEx Cup playoffs events, the BMW Championship is considered one of the most prestigious competitions on the PGA Tour. Before the event gets its winner, let’s find out the prize money and other benefits waiting for the champion after four rounds.

The total purse of the 72-hole tournament is $15 million. Notably, the winner will receive 18% of the purse, the standard amount according to the Tour’s prize money distribution chart.

There are only 68 players playing at the Wilmington Country Club this week. And unlike the other PGA Tour events, the second FedExCup Playoff event does not make a cut after the first 36 holes. Nonetheless, only the players who finished all four rounds will get to win a part of the total purse.

The FedExCup Playoffs champion’s prize money and other benefits

The purse money is distributed among all the players who last for all the 72 holes. However, there are some benefits that the tournament offers just for its champion.

As per the prize money distribution chart, the second Playoffs event winner will receive $2,700,000 from the total purse. He will also be able to win 2,000 FedEx Cup points. Moreover, the 2022 BMW champion will get approximately 51 Official World Golf Ranking points, with the points available based on field strength.

The money and the winner’s benefits are a huge plus that come from the event. However, it is also necessary for the field, including Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Rory McIlroy, and Jordan Spieth, to make it to the top 30. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be able to compete in the third and final leg of the FedExCup Playoffs, the Tour Championship, next week.

Last year, Patrick Cantlay won the event in a playoff against Bryson DeChambeau. Notably, the defending champion is also part of the field this week.
