This year has been full of many ups and downs for Patrick Cantlay. He got the chance to represent his nation in the Ryder Cup in October—a golden opportunity that got controversial after allegedly wanting to be paid for participating. His move to not wear the USA Ryder Cup hat ignited an undying flame of hate in the golf fans’ hearts.

Then, on a positive note, just days later, he tied the knot with his girlfriend, Nikki Guidish. However, recently, he suffered a huge setback and lost his sponsor, a $110.7 billion banking giant. Despite the huge loss, though, his year seems to be heading in the positive, with him offsetting the loss with some good company on Thanksgiving!

Patrick Cantlay signed a deal with Goldman Sachs in 2020, thanks to which he was given more than $1 million per year. This also included a performance bonus on the PGA Tour and winning the major championships. But this time the bank refused to renew the contract, ending their 4-year run with the golfer. This step was taken after their CEO, David Solomon, due to monetary reasons.

Sachs also closed down a department for personal loans and put some of its business on the market to be sold. Talking about this step to cut back, Tony Fratto, a spokesperson for Goldman Sachs, told the New York Times that “We constantly evaluate the firm’s partnerships, and at this time, our logo will no longer appear on his hat.” It definitely may be a devastating financial loss for Cantlay, who also earns a big part of his fortune through sponsors outside the game.

But leaving behind his woes for the moment, Cantlay is focusing on enjoying Thanksgiving, which he is celebrating with his new bride, Nikki Guidish, his PGA Tour comrade, Xander Schauffele, and his wife. In an Instagram story update, Guidish reshared the story of Maya Schauffele, Xander’s wife, in which she was throwing some self-defense moves. She then thanked Nikki and Partick for hosting the Thanksgiving dinner this year.

After his Ryder Cup appearance, Cantlay and the missus, who have been dating for two years, tied the knot in a ceremony in Italy. It was an intimate affair with their close friends and family only. This will be the first holiday season for the newlyweds, and both seem happy and excited for it. But on the sports front, this loss has produced issues for Cantlay.

Is this Cantlay’s karma for the Ryder Cup drama?

Until now, Cantlay used to wear a hat sponsored by GS with their initials printed on it after their President, John Waldron, turned out to be a fan of golf and advocated this. Now, with this abrupt change, Cantlay is left without a hat sponsor, and rumors have it that he is in search of a new one. Some may even claim that his hat tantrum at the Ryder Cup finally backfired on him.

It was at the beginning of 2023 that Goldman Sachs renewed their deal with him for a 1-year extension. But from 2024 on, Cantlay will have to find another. Although he continues to appear as a brand ambassador on the bank’s website, that too may soon change.
