PGA Tour and LIV Golf are working to extend their proposed merger deadline, originally set for December 31. But this delay has caused a bitter reaction from the community and pros. This delay has once again triggered criticism from Rory McIlroy. And he thinks the PGAT Commissioner is to blame for this.

The delay in the merger is the latest update in a long and tumultuous tale between the PGA Tour and Saudi-backed LIV Golf. However, the Irish golfer believes the PGA Tour and Jay Monahan will draw the short end of the stick if the merger follows through.

During the podcast Stick to Football, the 4x major champion said that competing with Saudi-backed LIV Golf based on money was not the right move from the PGA Tour. He questioned the policies of Jay Monahan, stating, “It put the PGA Tour in a position where they had to spend a lot of money that maybe put them on a path that was unsustainable.”

And the after-effects of those policies are now coming forward at PGA Tour events. “You’re seeing some sponsors pulling out because the [PGA] tour is asking for so much money and the sponsors, like we can’t, you know, can’t afford them,” he said.

The 34-year-old bashed the PGA Tour management, stating they can’t ask for 20-25 million from the sponsors and then not have the top 50 golfers compete in it. He believes sponsors are “not seeing the value in it” unless the event brings top-level talents. Furthermore, if the money is not ample, PGAT cannot compete with LIV. This endless loop, McIlroy thinks, stems from mismanagement.

But on the other hand, the Irish golfer believes this merger will enhance the competition. However, he still had a word of advice for the PGA Tour while moving forward with this merger.

McIlroy shared his views on the $3 billion merger and how it will positively affect the golf world. However, he also believes this will kill the PGA Tour in the long run. He said, “I think the PGA Tour trying to compete with LIV on the Saudis’ money is completely unsustainable. They can’t do that.”

The Irish golfer pointed out that the PGAT cannot win a fight if it is going to be just like a “money for money” thing. He also mentioned that the Saudis are spending a lot of money on sports all around the world, and having said this, the pro questioned, “How can you tilt the odds in your favor so that you can make your product better?”

The 34-year-old has been a staunch opponent of LIV and still thinks he won’t join the Saudi-backed league. But one thing he does not deny is that they would crush the PGAT if they fought them for money. Furthermore, by staying in this merger, Rory McIlroy thinks the PGA Tour is drawing the short end of the stick.
