Are legacies meant to be broken? Well, one should sure hope so as the 2023 Hero World Challenge comes to a close on Sunday. And, vying to create a mark of his own on the event and the sport is none other than Scottie Scheffler as he aims to take home the title of the champion and the trophy.

However, it might prove to be an uphill task for the athlete. Regardless, many eyes are on the PGA Tour Pro as he tries to win the Tiger Woods-hosted event all the while aiming to rewrite a 9-year-old legacy marked down by Jordan Spieth.

The hype is reaching its maximum in the golfing world as the PGA Tour’s unofficial event reaches its finale on the fourth day in the Bahamas. However, topping the scoreboard currently is Scheffler who registered scores of 69, 66, and 65 on the first three days. Although the golfer is well on his way to victory, the question remains- will he be able to pull off the best win ever in the tournament’s history?

To answer that question, one should look into the event’s past dating back close to a decade. Conjuring up the same, the 2014 edition of the Hero World Challenge saw Spieth emerging victorious at the event as he registered a whopping 26-under 262, at the Isleworth Golf & Country Club. The 3X major champ clinched the win with the lowest score ever to be witnessed in the competition all the while boasting the largest margin of victory, 10 below the runner-up Henrik Stenson at 272(-16).

Coming to the present, the 27-year-old Scheffler is currently at T1 with the numbers 16 under 200. Nevertheless, if he is to equal the former’s records, the 6X PGA Tour winner would need to at least score 62 (-10) in the final round thereby pushing his score to 262. However, if the current World No. 1 manages a 61 (-11), then he would be able to rewrite the tournament’s history while claiming the feat of the largest victory margin and the lowest round for himself.

Thus, the professional’s mind would be filled with concerns about how he can come out on top. However, the 1X major champ can rest easy about one thing, his standings on the OWGR.

A safe space for World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler

Although the golfer was absent from the game for a while, he can heave a sigh of relief with respect to the OWGR since the top six on the rankings would not change. Moreover, with the skills that the pro is showcasing on the greens, the top spot, which awards 30.0999 points to the winner, is just a step away from him.

Adding to the list of athletes who need not worry are the rest of the top six including the likes of Rory McIlroy (No. 2) and Jon Rahm (No. 3) who are not playing at the event. However, the rest in the field, including Woods, can gain or lose their position on the rankings depending on who would win the tournament.
