After a hectic battle for the title at the Butterfly Bermuda Championship, we finally have a winner. And it’s the same guy who last week had a hard clash against Matt Kuchar for the WWT Championship title. Neither of them won the title, though, and that’s a different story. This week, however, the Colombian golfer achieved what he pursued relentlessly.

Moved by his first win in ages, congratulations came in from every direction for the 41-year-old. Some major players from the PGA and the LPGA tours strongly expressed their happiness in his much-needed win. That his family went through a tragic incident a few years ago makes this comeback all the more inspiring.

Justin Thomas wrote this in his Instagram story, sharing the PGA Tour’s video of Camilo Villegas sinking the ball into the final hole: “What a game golf is. So happy for @camilovillegasofficial. After all, he and @maria_ochoam went through! Congrats, bro!”   Although he had lost the Nedbank race this week, Justin Thomas found the spirit to celebrate Villegas’ victory.

Speaking of the Nedbank Championship, let’s move on to the tournament winner Max Homa. He shared a post from the Tour’s page with Villegas’ quote saying “I got my little one up there, watching.” Homa wrote, “Congrats @camilovillegasofficial such an amazing win”

LPGA veteran Michelle Wie West also joined the party. She wrote “This just made my day!!!! Congrats!!”  and tagged the couple as well. Jessica Korda wrote in her story, “My favorite win of all the wins in the world.” She had tagged Villegas in the story, and also the page of the foundation Mia’s Miracles.

Mia’s Miracles is a charity foundation that the Villegas family started after the tragic loss of their daughter, Mia. The family lost the 22-month-old child to cancer in July 2020. The 41-year-old golfer said that the experience changed his perspective on life and life has not been the same ever since.

Coming back to his big win, it looks like he has been determined to end this season with a title win. Rightly so, since this win has now earned him exemptions to play in the US Open and the PGA Championship next year.

The recent spike in Villegas’ form

Camilo Villegas has had a dry spell since after his title win at the Wyndham Championship in 2014. The golfer came really close to victory in last week’s WWT championship. After a tough clash between him and Matt Kuchar, both of them ended up finishing with a shared 2nd position, as another player took home the trophy.

Beating Alex Noren was his challenge this time around. Noren had a very strong first round where he scored a 10-under. Meanwhile, Villegas started off with a decent 4-under in the first round and jumped up to an amazing 8-under in the second. Then he remained consistent in the last two rounds with a 6-under in each.

Looking back at his season so far, he had struggled to make the cut and has had average finishes throughout. He took a four-month break between June and October and played in the Sanderson Farms tournament where he failed to make the cut again. But something changed this November. Whatever it is, it has worked well for him!
