“I knew if I played well this week after last week I would have a chance.” Interestingly, Matt McCarty sure did play well this past week. The proof of that is the trophy now in the hands of the 26-year-old golfer after emerging victorious at the Black Desert Championship in just his 3rd start on the men’s circuit. But as he proved his mettle in the FedExCup Fall season event, has that helped him secure a spot in one of the most prestigious tournaments in the sport, to be held in Augusta next year?

Quite a valid question, and there is a definite answer, no worries! As per the PGA Tour, any golfer who wins an event on the FedExCup Fall receives the same benefits as a winner of a regular-season event. These include a two-year exemption on the men’s circuit, 500 FedEx Cup points, and a spot in the field for various events, including THE PLAYERS, The Sentry, and the major championships.

So the answer to that question is a firm ‘Yes’. Matt McCarty will be able to tee off alongside the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, and Xander Schauffele, thanks to his recent win at the Black Desert Championship. He achieved this by carding a figure of 23-under 261 with the scores he put up over the four days of play: 62-68-64-67.

It seems like a comeback of sorts. Confused? Well, the golfer’s first start on the PGA Tour came back in 2022 when he teed off in the U.S. Open. However, as fate would have it, that year wasn’t his, as Matt McCarty failed to make the cut and finished with a dismal score of 4-over par overall after carding 71-73 over the two days.

The athlete’s second start came after he claimed three wins on the Korn Ferry Tour, allowing him to earn a card for the Jay Monahan-led circuit. As a result, he teed off at the Sanderson Farms Championship, where he finished T63. The past two placements make this recent victory all the sweeter!

Matt McCarty’s reaction to the Black Desert Championship win

“To do it like this, I don’t know how you can kind of expect this, to be honest. I don’t know,” said the pro when asked how he felt after the win. Surprised? He sure was, as the golfer also added how he was initially just aiming for the experience. “To get out here a little early was just like,” said Matt McCarty, while alluding to the win he claimed at his third start, “To get some experience was great, and obviously this now. I mean, it’s just been a crazy last few months for me. It’s been a lot of fun.”

That’s not all. He also expressed his excitement for the future that awaits him. “I’m just really excited for all the opportunities that come with this and everything,” continued the pro. “This is what I’ve wanted to do. To be able to play in all these tournaments I’m going to be able to play in coming up is going to be really special. So I am just really looking forward to that.”
