With the final day of the 2024 Sony Open in sight, many would be looking to clinch the title of champion along with the winner’s cut from the $8.3 million prize purse. The pro had been able to finish T4 following the second day’s play on Friday at the Wai’alae Country Club. However, it seems as if happiness for the professional would be short-lived as a certain stat came to be revealed by the PGA Tour Champions on their X handle a while back!

A possible disappointment for Stewart Cink

A tweet was shared by the senior circuit on their social media handle, mentioning how winning the Sony Open would be an “opportunity” as he “chases his 9th career win.” But there’s a catch. The post also points out how there have been only a total of “eight players” who have “won on TOUR after turning 50.”

This fact would come off as nothing short of a momentum breaker and mood dampener for Cink, who is currently fifty years of age. Moreover, the athlete being pushed down to T7 from the fourth position on the third day after the 10th hole also does not bode well for his winning prospects.

Even so, if the golfer can emerge victorious, it would be a win that he was able to achieve after three whole years. He had won the last one at the 2021 RBC Heritage, his third crown for the event, increasing his total tally of wins to eight, including a major at the 2009 Open Championship.

Becoming the ninth player to card a win after turning 50 does sound good. However, he would only be able to do that if he could replicate the mindset that won him the third RBC Heritage victory.

The past glories of Stewart Cink

During the 2021 win, the golfer was able to join the history books for a variety of reasons. One of them was becoming the second oldest player after Hale Irwin to emerge victorious at the event at 47 years, 10 months, and 28 days.

Is that all? Not even close, as he became the fourth professional on the PGA Tour to win multiple times in a single season after turning 47. Moreover, the Alabama native was able to join the likes of Sam Snead, Julius Boros, and Kenny Perry to become a part of the same.

Well, after taking a look back at the accolades he garnered despite reaching a certain age, one can’t help but re-calculate his chances of winning the ongoing tournament. Nevertheless, the golfing world would be hoping for the senior pro to make his mark again on the circuit. Fingers crossed!
