The first major of the year is coming up soon. But, before that, Augusta National will witness another much-anticipated championship, the 2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur! While the event will showcase a scintillating display of golf, now there’s one more reason why the contest is all the more special, all thanks to the unfortunate split between Justin Thomas and his caddie.

The golfer and Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay had started their partnership back in 2021, after which the two had a wonderful run. However, much to everyone’s surprise, JT came forward just hours ago to announce the split between the two on his social media. But the surprise doesn’t end there. It appears ‘Bones’ has now picked up the mic back up for the upcoming Amateur contest!

A tweet was shared by Josh Carpenter divulging how Mackay will be “NBC’s on-course reporter this week for the ANWA.” What’s more, the golf writer even went ahead to mention how much of a great team the JT’s ex-looper and John Wood would be as full-time walking reporters.

Interestingly, being an on-course reporter wouldn’t be a new thing for the caddie. Why? Well, after spending twenty-five years as the current LIV Golf Pro Phil Mickelson’s bagman, he briefly worked as a golf analyst for NBC, after which he joined Justin Thomas on the greens.

Regrettably, a week before the Masters, the golfer announced the split as he said, While incredibly difficult for me to say, Bones and I have parted ways. I’m going to be forever thankful for him joining me on the bag in 2021.” Moreover, the 30-year-old went ahead to express his gratitude towards the bagman before wishing him the best of luck.

“His wisdom on and off the course has been a blessing during a tough stretch of my career and he was there every step of the way,” said JT before adding, “I know there are great things coming for both of us down the road.” Well, such a response makes perfect sense after taking a glance at what the two have accomplished together.

Was the Justin Thomas-Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay partnership fruitful?

Thomas had managed to win the second major of his career, the 2022 PGA Championship, with the help of Mackay. He did so while beating Will Zalatoris in a playoff after tying with him owing to figures of 5-under 275. That’s not all. The bagman had also helped the golfer with his bags when he was part of the U.S. teams for the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup.

Even Justin Thomas was all praise for his ex-caddie. “The things we’ve been able to accomplish together,” said the athlete, “the PGA Championship in 2022, the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cups were all unforgettable experiences.” Besides, after lifting a second major title together, it would only come off as a shock if they were to split up on ugly terms and thankfully, such a thing has not happened!
