Having Special Roots in Hawaii, Collin Morikawa Comes to the Aid of Wildfire Victims in a Heartening Manner: ‘It’s a Special Place’

The opening of the FedEx playoff’s first event had a positive start yesterday. While the golfers were giving their all on the course, unfortunate circumstances were unfolding in Maui, resulting in significant losses for families due to rampant wildfires. The immense hardship faced by both the people and the land in Lahaina is genuinely disheartening to witness.

It was during this critical moment that Collin Morikawa came forward to share his plans of taking the initiative to assist the affected community by donating $1,000 for every birdie he makes in the playoff. And now he is further shedding more light on his proposed actions.

When the devastating news of the Lahaina incident broke, it left everyone, including Morikawa, shocked and disheartened. In response, the American Professional golfer took to Instagram to publicly announce his heartfelt pledge to support Hawaii. At that point, he didn’t delve into the specifics of how his financial contribution would be utilized. 

However, during a press conference held on August 10th, after completing the first round, Morikawa elaborated further on his plans and shared more details about the intended use of his funds. When asked by the moderator, where his money will go, the 26-year-old golfer stated, “We’ve decided on two charities, Maui United Way and World Central Kitchen to help out not just people in Maui.”

During his remarks, Morikawa expressed his profound sadness at witnessing the suffering of Lahaina. He went on to discuss the before and after pictures of Lahaina, which he found profoundly shocking and disheartening. 

Additionally, the young golfer shared personal anecdotes from his childhood, reminiscing about his visits to the area and emphasizing his strong and enduring connection to that place. “It’s a special place. It’s amazing how many things you take for granted really in life, and when you see that, it’s just heartbreaking.” Morikawa concluded.

Morikawa is positive about getting more help from the golf community

During the same press conference, the moderator asked Morikawa if his initiative would inspire other golfers to step up and offer assistance. In response, the two-time Major Championship winner expressed his hopeful anticipation that his efforts would indeed inspire more and more help from the golfing community.

Furthermore, Morikawa assured that he intends to contact his sponsors and acquaintances. This is to urge them to join in the cause and contribute whatever they can. He even mentioned a unique approach, suggesting that for every birdie they make, they donate a certain amount to support the cause.
