Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy is currently playing at the Horizon Irish Open at the K club. While he has been back and forth for a while concerning his health, the four-time major winner’s current performance on home soil makes his muscle spasms during the Tour Championship look like history.

However, more than Rory’s game from day two of the Irish Open, an interaction is creating the buzz, which has left fans in awe of his beautiful spirits. And why not? The minute the golf world witnessed the emotional side of their brilliant golfer, they could not hold back their feelings as well. The impact was such that one fan even allotted McIlroy the title – “ambassador of golf”, leaving the legend, Tiger Woods strangely out of the picture.

Rory McIlroy goes above and beyond with his humble gesture

A golf enthusiast, seven-year-old Michael Horgan had one request – he wanted a video message from his favorite golfer and hero, Rory McIlroy. But he did not get it. Instead, the pro golfer decided to surprise him and meet him in person on The K Club course.

The seven-year-old played several roles on the field next to Rory. He caddied for him and was also a playing partner on the ninth hole of the Irish Open. The duo tested the greens and drove around the golf course. And Rory even asked Michael to help him with a shot or two.

The DP World Tour posted a snippet of this moment on Instagram. It reveals that the seven-year-old kid is living with a brain tumor. But his enthusiasm in the video is one many can learn from. When he sees his hero, McIlroy, and receives a “Hi Michael,” he responds, “Hi Rory!” Their interaction is nothing short of a beautiful sight and knowing that one of Michael’s dreams is coming true is a sight to behold.

The World No. 2 also gave Michael Horgan a replica of his own putter. When Michael made a putt, Rory said, “pretty strong.” The young lad replied, “My dad always tells me to hit it softer.” And enthusiastic Rory reassured, “We can work on that.”  The family also clicked a picture with McIlroy before he and Michael hugged goodbye.

Per Horizon’s agreement in 2022, they are the official title sponsors of Make-A-Wish Ireland. It is the tournament’s official charity to raise funds for granting wishes to kids living with life-threatening conditions. Rory recently spoke about how close he is to the cause. Fans were the first to respond with their reactions to his heartwarming interaction with the little enthusiast.

Earlier in the press conference, Rory explained that he feels fortunate to have a healthy girl and drew a comparison with all the people facing challenges raising their kids. The knowledge acts as a motivation for him to involve himself in causes that cater to those struggling. And on a side note, engaging with children seems to enrich his experiences and fulfill him.

Aware of this, the golf world commented on the video shared by the DP World Tour. If you did not watch the interaction live, you can hear from someone who did. “I saw this from the crowd. Rory spent a lot of time with Michael and his parents chatting and asking questions. He was truly engaged and natural off camera too. Rory is a brilliant role model. And I wish Michael the very best in his health and recovery.”

One could not help but reflect on the sensitivity of the situation knowing the medical condition of Michael. “Absolutely heartbreaking but at the same time a lovely memory for Michael. Hopefully he beats it and lives a full life. Such a great video.” Another fan was very impressed with Rory McIlroy for his gesture. “Class mr mcilroy absolute class, good luck in your treatment young man.” 

Some fans have a knack for putting things in perspective, no matter how complicated. “How can something be so heartwarming and simultaneously so heartbreaking. Wishing the young fella all the strength in the world.”

There was one top-tier compliment putting Rory in the highest regard. “What a guy is Rory, a fine ambassador to golf, the country of Northern Ireland and humanity.”
