He is currently on the verge of repeating history. The Northern Irishman sits two shots behind the leader heading into the final round of the Irish Open at The K Club. A blistering 6 under 66 landed him in contention. Saturday’s game was a completely different story than Friday’s. Is it possible that Rory was reaping the benefits of fulfilling someone else’s wish?

Rory McIlroy warms hearts with his honest words

The four-time major winner currently sits in third place on the leaderboard, two shots behind Germany’s Hurly Long. After a hilarious yet worrying incident of struggling to find fairways, the game on Saturday was a huge jump. And it puts him in contention to win the title for the second time after 2016.

However, alongside his splendid game, another gesture by the golfer is creating headlines. On Friday, he met with seven-year-old Michael Horgan to fulfill the young boy’s wish. The kid is battling a brain tumor. And all he wanted was a video message from his hero as part of Make-A-Wish Ireland (the tournament’s official charity, raising funds for granting wishes to kids battling life-threatening diseases). But McIlroy went one step further and made the fans day.

The golf pro invited the kid to The K Club and spent time with him. Michael played several roles on the field then, from that of a caddie to playing alongside the Irishman on the course. And the interaction brought as much joy to McIlroy as it did to Michael. “Yeah, it’s obviously incredibly fulfilling to be able to—I took 15 minutes out of my day. It’s not as if I did that much,” said the 4-time major winner in the interview after the third round!

McIlroy added that he wanted to help the little guy and give him a little push in his fight. “Hopefully the impact that has on Michael and hopefully the memories that he gets from it and the boost from it helps him sort of on his journey.” Moreover personally he revelaed how the interaction had been an eyeopener for him, putting things into perspective for his own family!

McIlroy finds deep perspective in his moments with Michael

Earlier, Rory McIlroy had opened up about how lucky he finds himself to have a healthy daughter at home. And drew a comparison with parents who overcome challenges to raise their kids. The knowledge of this alone motivates him to engage in the cause of helping people. And interacting with children makes for a fulfilling experience for him.

Adding to that, he stated that the interaction with Michael had helped him appreciate his life and family more. “I was delighted to be able to do it, and just makes you feel very fortunate for Erica and I have a healthy little girl and not have to go through what his parents, Connor and Anne, have had to go through. It puts a lot of things in perspective,” he stated boldly.

With this newfound perspective, will the golf great go on to perform better on the greens as well and head home with a win for both his family and Michael’s? Only time will tell!
