With the Ryder Cup Face-Off Just Around the Corner, an Ailing Rory McIlroy Lets Slip a Concerning Update About His Game: ‘Out of the Rhythm’

Apart from the mental hardships that golfers often go through on the course, they also go through physical exhaustion or injuries. The physical pain is usually borne by the golfers in their lower backs since they stand from dawn to dusk on the course while competing. Players do persevere through those hurdles more than often, and one player who is doing so currently is Rory McIlroy

It is always concerning for the fans to see their favorite golfers suffer and miss out because of nagging issues. McIlroy recently shared an update about his health at the Horizon Irish Open, wherein he is currently competing.

Every tournament for a golfer is just as important, but the Ryder Cup stands more glorious due to the patriotic feeling and national glory coming into account. The tournament is fast approaching and each country wishes to see its squad in top health. 

One of Europe’s top players, Rory McIlroy, has been dealing with persistent back issues for about two weeks now, and has recently shared an update regarding the same at the ongoing Irish Open. The interviewer asked the golfer what challenges he faces with his back issues and how he tries to maintain his form.

The golfer said in order to get back into the desired form, he tries to trust his skills, “I think more than anything trusting yourself, trusting your swing, trusting your ability to swing the way you want to swing, all that sort of stuff. So mostly that.” He also said that he hasn’t gotten a lot of time to practice or hit a lot of balls since it has just been a week between the Tour Championship and the Irish Open.

He also said that despite it not being a lot of time, he knows where he is lacking and what he needs to work on for the upcoming competitions. He also revealed that he knows what patterns he is missing. “You sort of, you know, you get a little more comfortable knowing if you’re missing it right or you’re missing it left, where to aim, where not to aim,” he said.

Furthermore, McIlroy claimed that he hasn’t played a lot in the last 10 days and hence is “sort of out of the rhythm.”

Talking about his plan for the upcoming days he said, “Hopefully as the week progresses I can get a little more comfortable.” The former world number one’s back issues have been quite persistent and bothered him throughout the Tour Championship. Though he marched through them and put on quite a show, but how did he start facing those issues?

The Irish golfer’s issues arose earlier this month before the Tour Championship. He shared that his right side got pretty tight from his rib cage all the way down to the right hip back at home. This caused a seizure and it eventually got better with some physiotherapy.

Before the FedEx Cup’s final play-off began, the 4X major champion worsened his back in the gym. His lower back seized up when he was doing squats. During the Tour Championship as well, he was seen stretching his back very often, indicating the discomfort he might be facing. He did not let his issues bother him, and he put on a great show for his fans.
