After withdrawing from the Masters last year, Will Zalatoris has picked up his club once again and has made his first official start on the PGA Tour for this season. After struggling through injuries for the past two seasons, Zalatoris made his comeback at the Sony Open in Hawaii and is currently playing in the second round.

The 27-year-old is just off of injury and has gone through extensive recovery sessions to be where he is. With injury woes still there to haunt the 2021 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, Zalatoris has chosen to push through them regardless and looks forward to what awaits next.

Will Zaltoris played the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play as his last tournament in March 2023. One month later, before his tee time at the 2023 Masters, the then-world number eight had to withdraw from the event. Later, Zalatoris released a social media post regarding ending his 2023 season earlier than expected.

The 27-year-old was diagnosed with two herniated discs in the back but played through until things got twisted. To get relief from the constant pain, Zalatoris underwent a microdiscectomy procedure after the Masters. Since then, the San Francisco native has had his first start at the Hero World Challenge in December.

The Sony Open at Wai’alae Country Club is the first step for Zalatoris’s 2024 season. But even after recovering from the injuries recently, he is pushing through more as the 1x PGA Tour winner will be playing at the American Express next week, having his first back-to-back event in a while. The Golf Injury Update posted a tweet stating that although the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship winner is not feeling 100%, he is determined to carry on and shed off his “ring rust.”

Right now, Zalatoris is playing through the second round of the Sony Open. He finished the second round at 5 over par and unfortunately missed the cut. But Zalatoris was prepared for what came next at the event he would play.

It is week-on-week progress for Will Zalatoris

After a nearly 7-month long hiatus, Will Zalatoris is a bit rusty in his gameplay. And the 1x PGA Tour winner did observe it in his play as well. However, during a recent press conference, Zalatoris stated that he believes “injuries are 80% mental and 20% physical.” For his return to the PGA Tour, the Wake Forest alum will not only work on his physical health but will be pushing his mentality to a different rhythm as well.

Zalatoris also revealed what he has changed in his game. The 27-year-old explained a change in his golf swing and believing in himself better than before. He said, “Each week, I’m going to keep progressing, even if I think I’m at a 100% I still could be better in the coming weeks.” Currently, the golfer stands at T131 at the Sony Open; the next in line is the American Express.
