The golf world would soon be hit with a new set of regulations. The USGA and R&A recently made an announcement to bring in changes to the game with respect to the rollback of golf balls. However, many, including the likes of PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, were not so much in support of the same when the news was declared earlier this year.

But, it seems as if not everyone would have the same opinion as Tiger Woods, one of the most prominent players in the sport at the moment, had much to say regarding the same. Besides, what seems surprising is that Monahan might have to think back on his stance as well since Mr. T himself made contrasting remarks about the new rules.

The two governing bodies recently announced that they would change the regulations regarding the rollback distance of golf balls. However, the said changes would be made for both amateurs and professionals as the assessment for Overall Distance Standards would witness replacing the current swing speed of 120 mph to 125mph consequentially resulting in many equipment being declared obsolete.

And, when asked about the same after the third round of the Hero World Challenge, the 82X PGA Tour Pro was in much support of the new rules. Moreover, the Hall of Famer mentioned how he has “always been for bifurcation,” taking the example of “wood bats and metal bats” all the while referring to the different sets of rules for elite and recreational players.

Explaining more on his stance, the 15X major champ divulged how the changes have been on the talks ever since he has been playing the sport. Moreover, the 47-year-old expressed his belief about there not being “enough property anymore” as he confessed how “hammering the ball needs to slow down” despite the fact that “it has kept speeding up my(sic) entire time on career.”

The new changes and the legend of the game supporting the same is not a small matter. However, what’s surprising right now is that the PGA Tour Commissioner might have to rethink his stance now since Woods has conveyed his preference.

Will Jay Monahan go back on his words?

A new Model Local Rule was set to be introduced in 2026, which would limit the distance of the balls hit by many including the likes of Bryson DeChambeau. However, Monahan and, consequentially, the PGA Tour expressed their opinion regarding the same as they went ahead to indicate how “the proposed MLR is not warranted and is not in the best interest of the game.”

Moreover, adding to his stance at a Players Advisory Committee, the official mentioned how they would not support the new modifications despite the men’s golfing body being “committed to collaborating with them.” However, it remains to be seen whether the commissioner would stand by the verdict that he made much earlier after the second player on the 2023 PGA Tour PIP list expressed his contrasting opinion!
