It was a good start for many, while others could have hoped for a better one. Well, Bryson DeChambeau wouldn’t be complaining since he belongs to the first group of golfers, all thanks to his astonishing gameplay during the first round at the 2024 Masters. But for others, such as Wyndham Clark, he could only place himself well below the 30-year-old LIV golfer.

However, it seems Clark wasn’t too dejected after his 1-over par score, which placed him at T42 among the total 89 golfers. Interestingly, the PGA Tour pro took to expressing his chances at catching up to the professional all the while issuing a jab at the breakaway league.

A tweet was shared by NUCLR GOLF on their X handle (previously known as Twitter), disclosing the comment made by the 2023 U.S. Open champ on chasing down the current leader of the scoreboard. “In LIV Golf they only play 54, so I like my chances,” said Clark before adding, “We’ve got a lot of golf left — someone shot 7 under… I could do that tomorrow,” all while referring to the ‘Scientist’ who scored a 65 (-7) on Thursday.

Clark, however, could only manage a 73 (+1) owing to the three birdies he made on the par-4 holes: Flowering Peach (No. 3), Pampas (No. 7), and Carolina Cherry (No. 9). Moreover, he also carded two bogeys and a double bogey, the last of which came at the par-5, 15th Firethorn.

Meanwhile, the LIV golfer registered a total of eight birdies, five of which came on the second nine. What’s more, he only carded a single bogey on the par-4, Carolina Cherry. Well, the performance the two dished out, coupled with his recent comments, did not sit too well with the community. Consequently, a lot of users on X did not go too lenient on him.

Wyndham Clark’s Bryson DeChambeau dig earns the ire of golf fans

In the ongoing Masters Tournament, for a player to make the cut, he has to make the top 50 or ties. Besides, Wyndham Clark currently being placed at T42 does paint a bleak situation for the golfer as well. That’s not all. If he has not completely recovered from the back injury he suffered during the Texas Children’s Houston Open, then the situation for the professional seems all the more concerning.

Moreover, a total of three top-10 finishes in the eight starts, just seem to allude to the inconsistency in his performance, as many took to respond to the jab at DeChambeau with comments such as, “Got a hundred, Clark, that says you won’t. Want to take the other side?” and “You know what, there are a ton of PGAT guys that can’t do 54……its called the cut…….” However, the cream of the crop came when a follower reacted, “Frustrated with his own poor performance so he puts down others. Wyndham has not been at the top of the sport for very long- let’s hope he figures it out. He’s got a better chance of playing only 36 holes this week than catching Bryson! Just a super lame guy”

Meanwhile, although some followers took to respond against the comment made by the PGA Tour Pro against DeChambeau, they did so rationally all the while dubbing him as short-sighted. Back in 2023, Brooks Koepka won the PGA Championship while being a LIV golfer while Jon Rahm, who defected later on, won the Masters. Consequently, a follower went on to comment, “I get and understand his point, but he’s being historically myopic. How did the LIV guys do at the Masters last year? How did LIV do at the PGA Championship last year? QED The 54-hole thing won’t be an issue for elite LIV players, or at least, not for ALL of them.” But, not everyone was so calm-headed in their response, as another user reacted, “With Brooks winning a major while at LIV this is a lame comment. Boooooo.”

Interestingly, at the same time, only a few of the golf enthusiasts in the online community went ahead and took his side. Some responded, “I mean, what he said is true,” while others said, “He’s just being honest. LIV does play 54 holes and he could go low tomorrow. I see nothing here except truth.”

Well, it appears the community took it upon themselves to defend Bryson DeChambeau and count Wyndham Clark’s jabs. But even so, many of the PGA Tour Pro’s fans would hope for him to deliver on his words during the second round of the major championship. Surely, a lot of fingers will be crossed for the golfer.
