As TGL approaches its much-hyped launch, the showrunners recently announced its format. The golf world received it with doubt, indifference, excitement, and hope, in varying proportions. While there is still tons of anticipation for Tiger Woods‘ answer to LIV Golf on behalf of the PGA Tour, that’s not all. Jokes keep coming in about the bold and new route that the league has taken.

In these circumstances, TGL’s Twitter handle has come up with more. After announcing the match format, the TGL team later added updates about the points system and the playoffs roadmap as well. The update didn’t escape the trolls, either. And Justin Thomas got dragged into this as well!

The match format of TGL was announced on Twitter, and they received mixed opinions mostly. While the format was interesting and had twists to the usual matchplay format, fans expressed their doubts about it.

Following that, the TGL has announced updates on the format and shared the regular season’s points system. The league offers points to the losing teams as well.

The ‘Used Golf Facts’ Twitter handle quote tweeted this announcement and wrote, “Wow. TGL gives points to teams even if they lose. JT must be excited 🤣”  Justin Thomas recently signed a deal to play for the Atlanta Golf Club, in the TGL. Notably, he is the first player to sign for a team in the TGL.

Coming back to the TGL format, every match has three rounds, including two regulation sessions and one overtime round. Session 1 is a nine-hole game where three players alternate between the shots, or ‘triples.’

Session 2 is a six-hole game where players go head-to-head in’singles’ matches, getting two holes each. The overtime tie-breaker round will have a 3-on-3 closest-to-the-pin competition until one team scores two. Points will be given out in abundance for these sessions too, and that’s a different discussion altogether!

In the points system, the winning teams of all the rounds get 2 points in each round. However, there was a difference in how the losing teams scored in the rounds. The overtime round’s losing teams will receive a point, while the regulation sessions’ losing teams won’t receive any points.

The top four teams will compete in knockout quarterfinals to enter the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, the two teams will go through three matches to become the champions.
