It appears the curse didn’t end with Tiger Woods! The legend of the game had to withdraw from the signature event at the Riviera Country Club early owing to experiencing influenza-like symptoms along with dehydration. However, it seems he wasn’t the only one who suffered the same fate, as Patrick Cantlay was also reported to be sick a while back.

A tweet was shared on X (formerly known as Twitter) by Daniel Rapaport. It mentioned how Johnson Wagner from Golf Channel reported how he heard from Jamie Mulligan, Cantlay’s coach, that the golfer was down with a fever. As per reports, “PC woke up with over 100-degree temperature and had some sort of illness.” Meanwhile, this reportedly caused him to not display his best golf on Sunday, scoring one over par 72 and finishing T4.

Following the end of the round on Saturday, the 31-year-old was leading the scoreboard with a 14-under from the three days of play. He had managed to do that by carding scores of 64-65-70 over the three rounds. However, 2 birdies along with three bogeys on the final day pushed his score to 13-under, missing out on his chance to tie second with Luke List and Will Zalatoris or even win the event like Hideki Matsuyama.

Well, for one, he can rest easy since he reportedly came down with symptoms on the last day, unlike Woods. The 48-year-old had to be escorted away on a cart, following which he was given an IV drip for his dehydrated state. Moreover, he could only finish the tee shot on the seventh hole on day 2, after which he was shown as WD from the signature event.

Meanwhile, Cantlay becomes the third athlete from the field at the Genesis Invitational to get sick during the tournament. On the second day of the event, even Jordan Spieth was reported to be sick. Although he was disqualified from the tournament, Xander Schauffele came forward in support of the professional and confirmed the speculations of the 30-year-old being sick.

Xander Schauffele reveals the truth about Jordan Spieth

“He was really sick and he had a rough last hole,” disclosed Schauffele when asked about Spieth and his disqualification. Adding on, he revealed how “he had to go to the restroom and came back like a minute later and the card was wrong.” Moreover, the golfer was forced to “go kind of ask some questions around” after the break owing to some confusion.

But, interestingly, the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open champ did make sure to point out how “unfortunate” it was that the events transpired the way they did. Moreover, he even called for “some sort of softening on the rules,” while alluding to the regulations that disqualified the golfer. Anyhow, it seems the illness did affect the field of golfers tremendously. One had to withdraw, another was disqualified, and the third lost their chance to win the title. Nothing short of saddening!
