The first session of the Ryder Cup 2023 leaned toward the east of the Atlantic and the US fans are not happy at all. While there have been no extraordinary performances from the American side so far, one name has taken relatively more damage this morning.

With the entire session swept off of their feet, the Americans are facing heat from the fans. This is especially true for the Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns duo. They have triggered a Ryder Cup veteran so intensely that he expressed his strong opinion about the pair.

When the US squad list became public, the fans protested‌ with some of the choices. Looking back now, one can see that Sam Burns, besides Justin Thomas, took the most heat in terms of his selection. Social media buzzed with theories that Burns made it to the team because he was friends with World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

The duo actually paired up in the morning session today. Amidst a disastrous performance, a controversial shot from Sam Burns encouraged the skeptics to reiterate their opinion. At their ninth hole in the morning foursomes, Burns sent the ball swimming in the water following a fairly good shot from Scheffler.

A recent tweet from a journalist spoke about this and mentioned Ryder Cup veteran Hunter Mahan’s comment on the matter. Apparently. Mahan said, “I don’t care if they’re friends. They need to split them up.” He reportedly said this at a live media center broadcast from the Marco Simone.

Responding to the tweet, a Twitter user commented that Hunter Mahan was right. Mahan replied, “Done.” It might be a bit of a stretch, but he may have implied that the duo has been split up. Scheffler took to the field for the afternoon foursomes without his ‘friend’, instead teeing up with LIV golfer Brooks Koepka

Let’s travel back a month in time and see what the fans felt about Burns’ place in the Ryder Cup team this year.

A quick flashback from late August

Popular opinion has so far been that the rapport between the players overshadowed talent during the selection process this year. Not that the selected players lacked in talent, but fans argued that there were more eligible and experienced players that were in good form of late as well.

Among the many, some popular names that were suggested as alternatives included the likes of Keegan Bradley and Bryson DeChambeau. Fans felt that both had quite the experience and also were in form during the tournaments that preceded the Ryder Cup.

Well, for all we know, maybe it’s the combination that is not working out. Perhaps a different pairing might bring out the best in Sam Burns in the following sessions. We will have to see how that goes!
