The PGA Tour creates history in Scottsdale

The PGA Tour and DraftKings broke ground earlier this week on a site in Scottsdale, Arizona, near the WM Phoenix Open. The site is to become the first sportsbook at a tournament venue. Jay Monahan, the Tour’s commissioner, described his excitement and stated, “It’s a big deal.”

In less than a year, the building will be finished, covering over 12,000 square feet and located just east of the TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course. The sportsbook will have the capacity to host 390 people. It will be open throughout the year, serving drinks and food.

The spot will also have close to 40 betting kiosks in addition to 7 booking windows. It will also have over 3,400 square feet of screens and video walls. The Sportsbook also focuses on customer experience and will have an outdoor patio with screens. In addition, it will also have private VIP cabanas with firepits.

What swayed Monahan’s opinion of the sportsbook?

Five years ago, the Tour commissioner stated that he couldn’t imagine having a sportsbook at an event site. But eventually, Monahan came around when he saw the potential that the betting sector had. He stated, “As we started to understand what the opportunities were market by market, this is a market that we realized we could do something very special [in].”

The commissioner stated that Scottsdale was the ideal location, and that this sportsbook would work as the pilot program. He wanted to make sure that what they were doing worked before the tour scaled up. He explained, “I think we’ll take the findings here and as opportunities present themselves, we’ll consider them.”
