Over the past couple of weeks, the golf world has bore witness to many soul-stirring accomplishments on the fairways. From fan-favorite Rickie Fowler‘s resurgence to Rory McIlroy‘s win at the Scottish Open to Brian Harman’s maiden major win, the uplifting moments have greatly overshadowed the not-so-pleasant ones.

Amidst these amazing feats, however, one player’s dip in form has become a cause of worry for fans and fellow golfers alike. It is none other than Justin Thomas, who has suffered 4 missed cuts in his last 6 appearances. As another PGA Tour legend speaks up on his current dry spell, Thomas will want to take notes, especially with the 2023 Ryder Cup drawing near at a breakneck speed!

15-time PGA Tour winner reflects on Justin Thomas’ ongoing slump

Last week, at the 151st Open, Justin Thomas kicked things off with a tragic 11-over-82. The worst-ever round of his professional career, the Louisville native then carded an even-par 71 in the next round to miss the cutline. In fact, this year, Thomas made the cut in only one major event, when he tied for the 65th spot at Oak Hill.

Thomas’ current slump has also endangered his Ryder Cup chances, which is highly disappointing given his success at the biennial event. Even the squad’s vice-captain and golf legend, Fred Couples, has also weighed in.

He’s off and why? I don’t know,” shared the 1992 Masters winner. “He’s got a pretty powerful swing. [If] you start not putting well and you start driving it poorly, you are gonna struggle.

The 63-year-old shared his thoughts in an episode of SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio. Couples also had a bone to pick with the dietary restrictions that Thomas had imposed upon himself, deeming it unnecessary. “I can’t imagine trying to change something that I don’t need to change,” he said, opining that the 2-time Wanamaker Trophy winner was already in perfect shape.

People say, ‘well that’s just eating different.’ Well no, that’s feeling different on the golf course,” noted Couples. The 15-time PGA Tour winner’s concerns come just days after US Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson voiced his support for Thomas.

US Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson extends his support to Justin Thomas

Justin Thomas has been a part of the American squad for the Ryder Cup twice, once in 2018 and later in 2021. He has also been one of the more successful players in the tournament, boasting a record of 6-2-1, which makes the golfer’s ongoing slump all the more frustrating for fans.

But, Team US captain and 2-time major winner Zach Johnson still believes that Thomas has it in him to bounce back into winning ways. “I might be slightly concerned, like I said, as a friend, but I’m not worried about him because I know what he does and I know what he’s capable of,” the 47-year-old noted after Thomas’ forgettable outing at the 151st Open.

The top six players on the US Ryder Cup standings by August 20 will automatically become a part of the team. Meanwhile, the captain will get six additional picks. As of now, Thomas is ranked 14th on the US Ryder Cup standings. This means that he will have to make quite an impression over the coming weeks to keep his Ryder Cup dreams alive.
