The 2023 season was nothing less than a shaky rollercoaster ride for 34-year-old Rory McIlroy. Despite coming so close to ending his 9-year major drought, the golfer was unable to do so, and he attracted a lot of criticism in the golf world for his subpar season.

However, amid the turbulent times, McIlroy has found one supporting stick in the form of someone very special on his team—his putting coach Brad Faxon, who has decided to weigh in with his two cents for all the critics calling the Irish golfer out for his putting skills.

McIlroy’s putting coach stands up for the Irishman

Many people on social media and many of the golf fanatics in the media have blamed McIlroy’s putter for his failure to win a major this year, despite being in the mix and being one of the top favorites to win in all four major events. But it turns out that Brad Faxon, McIlroy’s putting coach, had enough of the criticism.

The former PGA Tour pro recently sat down with Golf Channel and hit back at everyone who has been criticizing the Northern Irishman’s putting. Faxon said sarcastically that McIlroy not winning a major would apparently lead to the end of the world. Speaking about the golfer’s putting, he said, “He didn’t have a great putting couple of days, but he had a great final round and a great putting week.”

Faxon struck back at everyone who was criticizing McIlroy, including himself, for the lack of training. The golfer’s coach said he wished anyone who posted anything online was listening to him at that point because “they don’t know anything about how a player thinks and what motivates them, what drives them; it’s beyond reproach.

The coach’s take on the Irish golfer did not just end here. He went ahead and continued to defend the golfer even further, praising him for his performance throughout the year.

Faxon is content with how Rory McIlroy has played in the 2023 season

The 62-year-old fiercely continued to defend the 4X major champion and said that he is “a hell of a player.” He praised the golfer for finishing in the top 10 in the last seven tournaments that McIlroy competed in. Appreciating McIlroy’s performance in the major tournaments this season, he said that the golfer lacked just in Augusta, and in the other 3 majors, he played exceptionally well.

McIlroy is enjoying a break from golf and has not played any since not winning at the Open Championship. He will soon return to the course next week to compete at the first event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, where he last year missed the cut.
