A mistake on the course cost him his qualification. Jordan Spieth would be an extremely frustrated man right about now owing to the incorrect signing of the scorecard he did while on the 4th. Although he managed to put up a responsible front, his fans and other pro golfers were not so considerate of the PGA Tour. Well, this time around, it’s Rory McIlroy who expressed his stance on the same.

The Northern Irishman was spotted giving an interview after the second round at the Genesis Invitational. Meanwhile, as he conveyed his “traditionalist” views on the recent punishment, the golfer also made sure to dub the whole situation as nothing short of “unfortunate”!

“I can see both sides of it,” said the 34-year-old as he commented on the recent disqualification that his colleague suffered at Riviera. Moreover, he went ahead to point out how “we all need to keep our playing partners’ scorecard” if the game is to be kept “unbifurcated” while allowing the pros to “play by the same rules as the amateurs.”

Adding on, he called himself “more of a traditionalist” before going ahead to mention how he falls into the camp of those having a certain opinion: “if it’s worked for so long, I don’t think you really need to change it.” However, he also made sure to confess how he sees the “other side of the coin.” The pro highlighted the “thousands of people” watching the game and that “every shot’s tracked on Shot tracker and on the PGA Tour app” before going ahead to put forward the question of whether it’s needed in the sport.

Continuing with his response, he dubbed the whole situation with the PGA Tour champ as “unfortunate” for him as well as the event. What’s more, the 34-year-old also expressed his understanding of the athlete and his mistake on the course after recounting a “close” experience of taking “a wrong deop two weeks ago” at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Although McIlroy did sympathize with the 30-year-old, he also made sure to take a side in the whole debate. Well, the community would have undoubtedly not been surprised by the golfer’s verdict. Especially so following the recent kerfuffle that the two had with each other a while back.

Spieth and McIlroy exchanged a few varying opinions between themselves in a slight stirrup owing to the recent SSG deal that the PGA Tour entered into. The Northern Irishman expressed his displeasure at the comments made by the three-time major champ about the PIF following the $3 billion deal. “They are still sitting out there with hundreds of billions of dollars, if not trillions, that they’re gonna pour it into the sport,” said the pro before pointing out how the 2015 U.S. Open champ’s comments wouldn’t have made him too happy if he were PIF.

However, later on, they had a one-hour phone call where the two were able to clear the air on the difference in opinions they harbored. Moreover, the pair talked about “PIF’s involvement in the future of golf” following the golfer’s comments about the same, due to which the four-time major champ had removed himself from a group chat involving top players on the circuit.

Well, it seems as if there is no bad blood between the two now, especially after seeing McIlroy sympathize with the professional and dubbing his situation as “unfortunate.” One can hope that in the future, no one including Spieth, makes the same mistake again leading to such a disqualification.
