Is Rocket Mortgage Classic’s golf course in jeopardy? Since 2019, the PGA Tour event has been calling the Detroit Golf Club its home. While the event may be a recent one, the course, however, is not. Detroit GC’s greens has been around since 1899! But it looks like time has taken its toll on the historic golf course.

This begs the question about the PGA Tour event and what will happen to it. Well, to sort through greens, and to ensure that the players get the best experience while competing, the golf course will most probably be undergoing a hefty renovation.

Detroit GC to undergo renovations if members approve

The course was designed by Donald Ross, who is regarded as one of the top golf course designers of all time. One of the biggest proposals for renovations is the par-five 14th green. The pond in the middle of this hole is on its way to being removed.  According to The Detroit News, the $16 million cost of renovations will be covered by the members themselves, with a little help from Rocket Mortgage Classic funds.

By breaking down the cost of $16 million, the non-senior members will be paying around $5,760 each, while seniors will be paying $2,880. The RM Classic fund will cover $2 million of this hefty sum. Furthermore, the membership fees for this course will also go up.

But it all depends on the vote of the members, set to take place in a few days in March. “The proposed golf course project has been initiated by our membership to continue an exceptional golf course experience for many generations to come,” said club president Michael Pricer.

There are two courses here—the North and the South—that are fully utilized by the PGA Tour event, for the Rocket Mortgage Classic Event, that Rickie Fowler won last year. While the course is looking for renovations, the future of the PGA Tour event will also be kept in mind. And members have a plan to perform both tasks simultaneously.

What will happen to the Rocket Mortgage Classic?

Historically, numerous PGA Tour events have taken place in a new location if the original golf course is not available. Events like the McGladrey Classic and the PGA Championship have a reputation for hosting multiple golf courses. So will the same happen to the RM Classic? Luckily, the answer is no!

If the voting in March is in favor of renovations, the Detroit Golf Club will start looking for ways to proceed smoothly. For now, if the members approve, the renovations will begin soon after the 2025 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Furthermore, they promise to keep the event ready for the 2026 event. But do you think the PGA Tour event will be fair through this predicament? Let us know in the comments section below.
