‘We’re Probably Best Friends’: Sam Burns Reflects on His Friendship With World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler After Beating Him in an Intense PGA Tour Playoff

It is not a secret that winning makes everyone happy. And winning a PGA Tour event would be the dream of any professional golfer in America. Sam Burns won the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge held at the Colonial Golf Course. However, how does it make him feel to win a championship over one of his friends on the Tour? 

“We’re probably best friends,” Burns said about Scottie Scheffler, whom he defeated to win at the Colonial Golf Course. The event’s champion explained how his relationship with the runner-up is in the winner’s press conference after the tournament.

“But at the same time, I can assure you, he wanted to beat me more than anybody else,” Burns added. “…and I wanted to beat him more than anybody else, and it just happened to be the two of us at the end.”

According to the 25-year-old golfer, he and the current world No. 1 have developed a friendly competition. “It’s going to be a fun story that we’ll get to have for the rest of our careers,” he further added. “Fortunately, I got the better end of it this time,” he stated. 

Sam Burns defeated his best friend to claim his fourth Tour title!

Going into the fourth round, Burns was 7-shot short of having a shot at winning the event. Yet, after finishing with an impressive 5-under 65, all he had to do was to wait to know the result.

On the other hand, Scheffler scored a 72 and tied with his best friend to force him into a playoff. Even though Burns finished his game two hours before, he hadn’t lost his touch and made a 38-foot putt on the first extra hole. However, the world No.1 didn’t have similar luck, as he failed to make a 37-footer.

Notably, Burns’ 7-shot comeback at the event is tied with Nick Price for the biggest in a final round to win at the Colonial. Furthermore, he won $1,512,000, a plaid jacket, and last but not least, a custom-built Schwab Firebird Trans Am. 

Scottie Scheffler became the world’s No. 1 golfer after winning the WGC- Dell Technologies Match Play. Moreover, he won his first major championship at the 2022 Masters Tournament. Like Burns, he has also won four titles on the PGA Tour.
