“I’m not a caddie-firer or anything,” explained Shane Lowry when he had split with his looper Brian ‘Bo’ Martin. The duo had been together for a long time, even emerging victorious at the 2019 Open Championship, the golfer’s only major. However, a bad start to the year led to the athlete wanting a change on the bags, leading to him letting go of Martin and employing Darren Reynolds as a helper.

Now, the golfer is partnered up with his third caddie in the 14 years he’s been on the Tour. Well, the two have had a decent run after they got together including a Ryder Cup appearance resulting in the victory over team U.S.A. Interestingly, they continue to do so which is evident from the recent performance that Lowry was able to dish out with his bagman at the Cognizant Classic!

The Irish golfer paired up with Reynolds in 2023 after his split with his previous looper. They had parted ways after a missed cut at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in January before which he had finished T28 at the DP World Tour’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship despite going into the final day tied for the lead.

After two weeks, the athlete employed his current looper on the bag at the WM Phoenix Open before which the latter was caddying for another professional, Alex Levy. Lowry and Reynolds had previously worked together back in the summer of 2020, owing to Martin needing to spend time with his newborn baby. But, come 2023, they had a poor start at the Waste Management Open where they went ahead to miss the cut.

“That week in Phoenix was a bit weird for me, and I felt a bit different,” confessed the then-35-year-old Lowry as he recounted his experience ahead of the 2023 WGC Technologies Match Play. “But thankfully we went to L.A. and we had a decent result,” admitted the Irishman as he alluded to the Genesis Invitational, where he tied for 14th, before continuing, and then we went and contended at the Honda [Classic].”

Well, the two finished the Honda Classic with an amazing performance, at T5 with 9-under 271. After that, the duo experienced a good run with each other, finishing a total of nine times inside the top 20 till February of 2024, the best of which came at the Horizon Irish Open where they placed at T3 with a score of 12-under over the four days of play. Such a remarkable finish was only possible owing to the combination of the athlete’s talent along with the experience of the looper.

A look back into Darren Reynolds’s caddying past

Although Reynolds had caddied for Lowry back in 2020, the golfer had admitted that he didn’t feel as comfortable with the bagman as he did with Martin back then. However, his opinion changed after the two got back together in 2023. But before Lowry, the looper had his share of experiences carrying the bag for various professionals including the likes of Paul McGinley, Antoine Rozner, Paul Dunne, and Roger Chapman.

What’s more, he has his share of accolades while looping for these professionals including caddying for the French golfer Rozner when he emerged victorious at the Golf in Dubai Championship in 2020 and the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters in 2021. But, before carrying the bags for Lowry, he was partnered up with Levy.

“I’ve known Darren for years,” recounted the 36-year-old. Adding on, he said, “He had just started with Alex Levy on the European Tour,” before going ahead to mention that as the reason why he was hesitant in asking him at first. Continuing on his confession, he stated, “I knew he just got a new job and I didn’t want to take him away and then it not work out for us,” before admitting how Reynolds was one of the few options he had after the split with Martin.

Nevertheless, Reynolds’s love for the sport of golf is fairly evident in the way he helps out his golfers on the course. However, his affection is not just limited to the game of golf. Aside from the same, the professional looper likes to enjoy his time attending horse race meetings and watching soccer, exuding much love for Tottenham Hotspur.
