Matt Fitzpatrick won his first-ever major championship at the 2022 U. S. Open since he turned professional 8 years ago. While it will be a memorable moment for the English golfer for the rest of his career, it is a monumental experience for his caddie as well.

Billy Foster has been a caddying for professional golfers for 30+ years now. He has carried the bags for some of the veteran golfers like the late Seve Ballesteros, Darren Clarke, and Thomas Bjorn. Notably, Foster worked with Lee Westwood for 10 years before agreeing to be Fitzpatrick’s caddie.

Yet, Foster hasn’t had a chance to win a major throughout his career until last week at the Brookline Country Club.

How did Billy Foster react to his first major victory?

It was his first win in more than 30 years of caddying. Moreover, Billy didn’t hesitate to show his vulnerability to the golf world the moment he knew the English golfer had made his dream come true. Furthermore, he kissed the tournament flag to celebrate the occasion.

“I had a gorilla on my back,” Foster expressed how not winning a major title has been haunting him till now. “Lots of relief,” he added after taking a deep sigh of relief. “After all these years, and I’ve finally kicked one over the line.”

The veteran caddie even joked how Fitzpatrick scared him when he missed the putt on No. 17 for a birdie despite being a good putter. Notably, the English golfer still had a one-shot lead over Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris.

Who is Will Zalatoris’ Caddie?

“First and foremost, it was a relief,” the caddie explained how winning a major after all the years feels like. He also revealed his plans to celebrate the victory until next week.

How did Matt Fitzpatrick show his respect to the veteran caddie?

Matthew Fitzpatrick knew he won his first major the moment Will Zalatoris missed his putt for a birdie on the final hole. It was one of the special moments for the golfer and should have been celebrated. Yet, the golf world could see he chose to calm his crying caddie down before celebrating on his own.

Foster has assisted Fitzpatrick and other golfers to win several championship titles. However, like a major tournament means a lot to a golfer, it matters to a caddie too. And when the moment finally happened after 30+ years, Billy Foster felt ecstatic to win it!
