PGA Tour’s Worst Headache Might Turn 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson Into a Nightmare; Here’s Why

The PGA Tour might be hit with another weather hassle, as the troubling weather forecast for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson suggests. Earlier this season, This season the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am had to be cut short to a 54-hole tournament. The fifth signature event on the calendar saw the final round being pushed to Monday because of the inclement weather.

How will the four days look at TPC Craig Ranch and will it rain every day in Longhorn State till the event ends?

Thunderstorms and rain to not CJ Cup Byron Nelson alone

It had been raining in McKinney, Texas, even before the PGA Tour reached the TPC Craig Ranch. Thus, the Tom Weiskopf-designed venue will present softer conditions to players starting the Thursday round and the scores have been predicted to be lower than under 23 or 26, a norm for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in the past few years.

Starting on May 2, it is highly likely that there will be morning rain and thunderstorms with a 90% chance of rain. The projected rainfall for Thursday round is  .8 to 1.25 inches. The temperature will be between high 79 F and low 67 F, with the wind coming from south to southwest at a speed of 10–15 mph. It will be quite gutsy winds going up to 20 mph, which may be a pro or con for the players.

Seeing the inclement weather forecast, the defending champion, Jason Day, has predicted that preferred lies would probably be given to the players as it may be soggy at the greens and fairway. Expecting a rainy event, Day said, “I would think that we’re going to play probably the ball in hand the whole week.” However, he was hopeful that the poor weather may not be as bad by the end of the week.

The Friday round will follow suit as the opening round but with lowered chances of rain at 30%. However, it may still greet the pros in the morning with thunderstorms. Throughout the day, the rain might get slowed down and the overall rainfall will be 0.2 to 0.4 inches. temperatures will fall between High 81 F and Low 66 F with 10-15 mph winds from NE-ESE.

Will the rains dampen the weekend as well? Unfortunately, yes.

Instead of morning showers, there will be afternoon thunderstorms with a 40% rain chance and overall rainfall of 0.2 to 0.4 inches for the Saturday round. The temperature would be high (79 F) and low (67 F). Compared to the first two days, the wind will be relatively low, with a speed of SE 7–14 mph.

On Sunday morning, the player may start a normal day, but by the time the afternoon hits, there will be a 50% chance of a thunderstorm with  0.25 to 0.5 inches. of rainfall. The winds will flow from SSE at 14–18 mph, with comparatively high gusts going up to 27 mph. Seeing the current forecast, the PGA Tour pros and fans may have difficulty at the TPC Craig Ranch. If you’ve planned to visit McKinney, don’t forget to pack an umbrella!
