Emotional caddie of Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson was going through a dry spell in golf in 2013. But tables turned suddenly, and something magical happened. During the British Open championship in 2013, Phil put the last of 6 birdies on and ended the long wait of winning the British Open. After the putt, he picked up the ball and raised his hands in the air with happiness.

Phil’s caddie, Jim Mackay, placed the flagstick on the 18th hole. It was a glorified moment for all. But all this dry spell got drenched after the happiness turned into tears. Phil hugged his then caddie, and they cried on each other’s shoulders.

But here is the twist. Phil was not the one shedding tears; it was his former caddie. He appreciated Phil for playing the best golf round and choked on his tears even more. He said, “You work for a guy for 21 years, it’s pretty cool when you see him playing the best round of golf you’ve ever seen him play in the last round to win the British Open.”

Before and during the game

Before going on the golf course at Muirfield, Mackay gave Phil some tips. He gave him a target shoot and said that winning this is not that hard. Even a par or one is enough to win. He was talking about the overall score. To this, Phil replied that he could be better than just one par.

Phil began his day with five strokes. It was right behind the 54-hole leader, Lee Westwood. He made one bogey along with four of his last six holes. It was to a round of five-under-par 66. Phil then waited for the other final players to finish to see if his technique of three-under 281 would take him closer to a win.
