Golf legend Phil Mickelson is among the best golfers in the history of the sport. The player is a six-time major champion and has also won one Open Championship. The American Pro also has three Masters titles under his name.
After the recent statement released by the USGA, Phil Mickelson and other golfers playing in the LIV Golf Series were allowed to play in the U.S. Open. A lot of players were against the golfer’s decision to join the rival tour. They said it was against the legacy of the sport to betray the PGA Tour.

But in a recent U.S. Open press conference, Mickelson had a completely different outlook on his legacy. The moderator showed curiosity and asked “Lefty” what legacy meant to him. He also asked the golfer if his legacy would change after his decision of joining the LIV Tour.

Mickelson explained how thankful he was to the PGA Tour and what the tour had given him. He said, “I have enjoyed my time. I’ve enjoyed the opportunities it’s provided. I’ve enjoyed the fact that the game of golf through the PGA TOUR has been able to give me and my family so much.”
The player also added that he has tried to give back to the tour as well as the sport and that the LIV Series is his way of taking forward the sport. He said, “I’ve done the best I can to give back to it as well…” The golfer added, “I’m excited about the opportunity that LIV Golf presents for me and the game of golf going forward.”

What was Mickelson trying to say?
It looked like the player was well-prepared for questions like these before he came in for the media interaction. It is completely normal for him to expect these questions in every interview he gives. His decision of playing in the Saudi-backed series came as a shock to the golf community.

The golfer was associated with the PGA Tour for over 30 years of his career. Therefore, it is fair for him to decide whether he wants to stick to the original game format or try out something new in his career.

In the past, Phil Mickelson has been known to make negative and controversial comments about the PGA Tour. Maybe this was his way of making peace with the tour as well as the fans he lost during this transition. Only Mickelson knows what his real motivation is for taking this step.
