‘Phil’s a Troubled Soul’: 2022 US Presidents Cup Team Captain Speaks Boldly About LIV Golf Defector Phil Mickelson

After 30 years of playing on the PGA Tour, Phil Mickelson has signed with its rival, LIV Golf. He is also one of the first golfers to complain against the American golf organization. He pointed out that the Tour has been exploiting him and other golfers because of their ‘obnoxious greed.’ 

Many considered Mickelson’s comments against the golf organization a heroic act. However, do the Tour golfers hold the same opinion?

“Phil is a great promoter actor,” Davis Love III said. “You know, he’s played the part as the superhero of golf very well,” he added. The Presidents Cup captain revealed his thoughts on the 6-time major champion in the ‘Fire Drill’ podcast hosted by Alan Shipnuck and Michael Bamberger. 

Love III explained that the problems his colleague had with the Tour were nothing but rumors for the public. However, many get to know about the real Mickelson now.

At the beginning of the year, Mickelson had revealed how he thinks the players don’t get what they deserve from the Tour. According to him, the players have no rights to their own media content, and the PGA officials charge money from other companies and use them.

“He always has challenged the rules and regulations of the PGA Tour,” Love III said. “But the PGA Tour is what made Mickelson famous.” According to the 1-time major champion, the Tour system worked for Mickelson better than anybody. The American golf organization helped him get famous and even inducted him into the Hall of Fame.

“Phil’s a troubled soul,” Love III added. He explained that many of Mickelson’s friends, including him, tried to talk to him. However, they couldn’t reach him as he cut communication with all of them.

Mickelson established his name in the Tour even before he turned professional after winning the 1991 Northern Telecom Open as an amateur. He turned professional in 1992 and joined the Tour the same year.

Phil the Thrill has won 45 titles on the PGA Tour, including six majors. Notably, Mickelson won his last major in 2021 and became the only player to win a major title after turning 50. He has also played in the Senior Tour for American players, the PGA Tour Champions, and has won 4 titles there.
