Scottie Scheffler would rather focus on the present. But if you press him, he is willing to recapitulate on the past and tell you what mattered to him most during the hellish Ryder Cup outing — being present at the moment and controlling his approach. The OWGR 1 confesses how it all went haywire in the Ryder Cup.
Scheffler, obviously, went into a hiatus after the Ryder Cup debacle. He made a comeback last month at the Hero World Challenge, finally ending his title drought in the Tiger Woods-hosted tournament. Now in Hawaii for the Sentry, the 27-year-old opens up about Marco Simone disaster for the first time.

A sensational Jon Rahm held Scheffler & Co.
Scottie Scheffler felt he was in a better position in at least two matches. But Jon Rahm stood in their way, both times. Speaking of that weekend, the current World No.1 said, “I did a really good job of staying in the present that week… I could have very easily won two of my matches and lost two of ’em.”

In the Friday foursome, the 27-year-old was paired up with Sam Burns. Despite not making a bogey in a single hole, the duo lost 4&3 to Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm. Scheffler admitted that the Spaniard “just played incredible golf.”
In the afternoon, once again Scheffler went head to head with Rahm, joining forces with Brooks Koepka. Rahm and Nicolai Hojgaard, almost snatched the match from their clasp. The Spaniard made two eagles in the par-4 16th and par-5 18th to tie the match. Scheffler felt it was one of those times, when “you just go out and you get beat.”
What about the 9&7 thrashing at the hands of Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg, though? Scottie Scheffler frankly admits in the Sentry press conference, “Brooks and I just played really bad. It was one of those deals where I got off to a bad start.”

Thanks to wayward chips and dreadful drives, the Americans were “3-down, and then things just kind of started to spiral out of control.” It even surprised the winning duos. Scheffler “was not pleased with how that match finished,” but the 2022 Masters winner still had some positive takeaways.

Scottie Scheffler is ‘proud’ of his approach
Scheffler, however, “took that frustration from the match on Saturday into a good attitude on Sunday.” In the nail-biting duel, the OWGR 1. And OWGR 3, finished even to tie the match. Three months later, Scheffler is still in awe of Jon Rahm. “It was one of those ones where he was really playing great golf that week and sometimes it’s hard to keep up with that.”
