Why is the golf world divided again? Well, the story is quite long. The debate has been going on for a while whether the Spaniard Sergio Garcia should be given a seat in the 2025 Ryder Cup team or not. Well, here’s the thing  Garcia may make a return to the Ryder Cup in 2025 if things go as planned. The Spanish golf legend who is also Europe’s all-time leading points scorer had seemingly closed the door on his Ryder Cup career after joining LIV Golf and resigning from his DP World Tour membership last year.

However, like many things in the golf world, this one also had a loophole. The 2025 Ryder Cup captain for the International team, Luke Donald recently revealed that Garcia’s manager Carlos has hinted that the golfer may make a potential comeback. “I saw his manager Carlos at The Open and he mentioned something similar,” said Donald. Garcia himself expressed interest in reviving his Ryder Cup dreams on a Rick Shiels podcast last November.

But surprisingly, the Spaniard missed the deadline to reapply for DP World Tour membership and now faces hefty fines of $1 million to rejoin. But it seems like he’s willing to take that leap. European captain Luke Donald is keeping an open mind about Garcia’s potential return and that is exactly what the latest post by NUCLR Golf revealed. “European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald says there have been ‘conversations’ with Sergio Garcia regarding him potentially re-gaining his DPWT membership to qualify for the Ryder Cup in 2025” read the post.

Things were fine until here, but then the post dropped a bombshell of a question that has made a crack in the golf world. And it doesn’t look like it will be fixed anytime soon. “Should Sergio be on the team?”, was the question, and knowing how golf fans react to such a question, their actions were quite expected.

Netizens are divided on whether Sergio Garcia should join the 2025 Ryder Cup

While a lot of fans were in favor of Garcia joining the team, the rest were saying the opposite. Like this one said, “Yes, of course! One of the best of all time at that competition and he is in great form right now!” So is he? Well, yes! The golfer has had not one but 6 top-10 finishes and as if that wasn’t enough he also won the 2024 LIV Golf Andalucía with a brilliant score of 5 under par. Even European Captain Luke Donald expressed his thoughts on the golfer’s win and congratulated him. “I sent Sergio a message of congrats when he won Valderrama. Outside of that I haven’t really talked to him about specifics over whether he’s joining (the DP World Tour), but I did speak to his agent and I know he’s been playing quite well”, said Donald recalling their conversation. This one fan also said, “100 percent yes”.

Another fan said, “Yes. Get the best players competing against one another again. Even if Sergio isn’t a top player (in Europe he might be) he will bring eyes to the RC which benefits the game.” And well, they’re not completely wrong here. The game may actually benefit from the viewership they make by having golfers like Garcia on the team. The Ryder Cup has been seeing a significant surge in viewership over the past few years, and the 2023 tournament was not any different as the event drew a whopping 3.7 million viewers on Sky Sports over its three-day duration. This amazing figure was a 38% increase from the 2021 edition and a 25% rise from the 2018 tournament.

These comments will make you believe that everyone was on board the decision but some fans were completely against the thought of having Garcia on the Ryder Cup team. “Absolutely not. Shouldn’t be anywhere near it”, said one fan, while another said, “Nope, has-been, give me the young rising stars.” It seems like the fans are excited to see young players like Matt Fitzpatrick and Robert MacIntyre who have already made it to the team.
